BgEH 5 H " Shor, ling Not Blamed for| New Lows on Market Yesterday. - BY JOHN F. SINCLAIR. The New York stock market yester- | day had a bad day. The Dow-Jones in- | dustrial averages wers broken through to reach 192.00 as'against the November lows of 195.35 and the last Junc lows of 204.47. 'l‘wenty n;ndnd raflroad stocks, ac- he Dow-Jones averages, went down 236 points, and utilities 4.02 points. . This, in spite of the fact that the brokers' loans showed a decrease of $158,000,000 and are now dow: to $2,- 905,000,000, the lowest since 1927. Probably the failure of Prince & ‘Whitely, a New York Stock Exchange house established in 1878, which has nine branches throughout the country, was laj the cause. m'fi.’fidm stocks went - with_the | rest, None was spared. FEve: ing went. The cheap stocks and the blue chip stocks all slid together, and the closing was soft. 'l'he stock market decline today was due to distressed selling, and not to short selling,” said one large trader to me. “One very smart group of British traders hlve been selling stocks for the last 10 days and Zumms their money into cash. , has affected the market.” Will today be another hectic, hair- ralsing t'ly? Yesterday was more than that. It was, in addition, discouraging and demoralizing. “Unless something unforcseen hap- pens, the market is due for a rally,” con- tinued my trader friend. Further than that he would not commit himself. But the bulls secem tired after two ‘weeks of battling sgainst the tice. ‘Which reminds me of the story of the it naturalist, Charles Darwin, who vlded an .qu.rlam with a clear-glass He put a lusty pike in leeflnn and one WS lnbou:xe oth‘;n 'nn plke would strike every time a min- ipproached the glass partition. nflu n—’:s less. BY F. H. RICHARDSON, NEW YORK, October 10.—Bonds worked lower again today in heavy volume, but the declines were narrower than on Thursday and a few issues showed of steadying. However, South American dolllr bonds and semi- speculative domestic issues made new lows all around and there was a mod- erate amount of selling in the prime ‘l‘l‘mp. which was attributed to the con- tinuation of forced liquidation as a sequel to the weakness of stocks. Money rates were again unchln[ed with 90-day loans quoted at 2 to 2, per cent and ample supplies on hmd. At the opening South Americas were steady and a few issues had initial of small dimensions, but later trading brought out fresh selling and prices fell off 2 to 6 points from Thurs- day’s closing levels. A long list of South Amerlum SoM under the 50 cents on the dollar level during the session, in- cluding Bolivian 7s, Brazil 6l5s, Sao Plulo Bl City of Sao Paulo 61s, Peru 6s, Rio Grande Do Sul 6s and Rio nnd Do Sul 7s. Other New Bottoms. Further wide drops to new bottoms were made by Uruguay 6s, Bolivian 8s, Rio de Janelro 6i.s and 8s, Brazil Central Railway 7s, Sao Paulo 7s (the coffee loan), Colombia 6s, Antioquia “A” 7s, Santa Fe 7s, the Chile Mort- gage Bank descriptions and a few Chile -nu Argentine government bonds. German bonds were again weak, with the increasing certainty that Chancel- lor Bruening will be forced to call an- other election in that country.
