In his capacity as engineer he also had a prominent part in the de- velopment of many high-powered ship cngines and other equipment. Admiral Baird had the distinction of being one of the first nine persons ap- pointed to the District of Columbia Board of Education, under the present method of appointments by the justices of the District of Columbia Supreme Court, in 1906. He was immediately elected president, making him the first president_of the board under the new system. Prior to 1906 the board mems bers were appointed by the District Commissioners. Admiral Baird was past president of the District of Columbia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, & member of the American Society of | Engineers, the Washington Society of Engineers’ and the Soclety of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
