The Dagger-- A Mystery Story By Mary Dahlberg Copyright, 1930, by Duffield and Company. (Continued Prom Yesterday's Star.) CHAPTER XXXII AGGER'S lelsurely voyage across the Bay of Bengal, through the Straits to Singapore, and to Shanghal, was at once rest- ful and stimulating. She found interesting companions, gleaned such information as she could about Chang Kal Sho. A most remark- able every one was agreed. To her, ter identified with her journey. ‘The son of a poor millet-farmer, he had become a successful bandit during Japanese War, and in the period of confusion lfidndixf the collapse of the empire and the civil wars which fol- sovereign prince in the great northern Province of Sung-liu, rich, populous and so situated as to be the strategical Japanese and warring Chinese repub- licans alike courted and bribed and his armies, officered and trained as the trump card in any hostilities which occurred. ‘What she heard of him aroused Dag- Shanghai by the first available train for Peking. ‘With a special letter' of introduction consul at Sung-fu, Chang's capital, she took the Northern express across the Great Wall and up through the millet country, where coolies grew to be as tall as tall Westerners, and the reople of the villages bore themselves with an A different country, this. There was order and discipline at the way sta- tions; the train kept to its schedule; foreigners were neither scowled at nor ijgnored. Long miles before she reached her destination, Dagger appreciated sonality as Ghulam Buk was the ani- mating force of this system of admin- istration. In the Old Walled City streets were jumbled in a confusion past Westeren compre- hension, Shops were very similar to those of the North African citles Dag- ger had visited; sanitation was ignored; people lived in the intimacy of a bee- hive; butiness, trade, manufacture were conducted on the most primitive basis. But adjoining the Walled City, sur- rounding it, were more modern quar- ters, mainly Chinese in architecture, to be sure, yet struggling to adopt some measure of the spaciousness of the West, while here and there foundries roared and factories spun and wove and punched metal. In the midst of all was reared Chang's palace, a building of colossal dimensions, conceived in an atrocious mimicry of nineteenth century public buildings in Europe. Its one claim to beauty was the park which ringed its ugly square bulk. The garden wall was dotted with sentries and machine guns, and in barracks adjacent a battalion of infantry slept constantly upon their arms. Americans, from the consul down, were inclined to laugh at Dagger's am- bition to meet the Tu-chun— “My dear lady, he’s a most attrac- tive bandit, and he has the largest harem of Western women owned by any one individual in China, but you'd be disappointed in him, I assure you. He takes himself very seriously. And I wouldn't encourage a woman of your position to meet him —not that he couid do anything to you, you know, but he says the most terrible things, if he happens to feel like it. And he asks questions, too—oh, you'd be very unhappy.” Dagger quietly recited her recent adventures. “Do you think he'd be more danger- ous or annoying than & caravan of Saharan Arabs?” she demanded. “We-eell — perhaps mnot. But you won't get anything out of him. He rather looks down on women, to be honest with you.” “I wonder if you'd be willing to for- ward him a note from me?” she asked. “I used to know a man who was friendly with him.” “Oh, glad to, of course.” This was the consul. “But officially, I must RESORTS. You'll probably receive an invitation to meet the harem, at least—and they tell me that's one of the sights of China.’ Dagger's note was of the briefest: ‘o the Tu-chun Chang Kai 8ho: have heard of you from Blaine Howard. Will you talk to me of him? He was lost in the Great War, and I seek those of his friends he loved best to refresh my memory of him. “ALEXANDRA VANEERING.” His response was as sudden as it was unexpected. That afternoon the street in front of Dagger's hotel was invaded by troops. Cavalry on chunky horses galloped into formation; a long column of infantry unwound itself. And next, to the wailing invocation of Chinese music, a little group of mounted men rode up to the portico. To Dagger, watching amusedly from her window, came the hotel's Japanese proprietor, abashed and uncertain. “If you please, madame,” he ex- claimed, sucking in his breath politely and trying to_conceal his worry, “the ‘Tu-chun is below and asks to see you. Most unusual, this doing, madame. Maybe I better send for American, Japanese consul. What you think?” “Ask the Tu-chun to come upstairs, Mr. Araki” Dagger answered, more amused than ever. “No, I don’t think we need the consuls. I invited the ‘Tu-chun to call.” Mz, Araki looked doubtful, b “Chang plenty big man,” he doubtfully. “Never can know what he do. Make trouble with Russian for woman.” “He wont mske trouble for me’” Dagger reassured him. “Please ask him to come up to my salon.” “If you please.” Mr. Araki ducked his head lnd sucked in his breath simultaneously, perfect embodiment of Eastern and Western courtesy. “But if he make trouble you call loud and.I come q}l‘lk‘k No Chinese man do this in my hotel, madame—no, not the Tu- chun_ himself.” “I'm sure he won't,” Dagger assented. “But if he does——" Mr. Araki glowed under her smile and retired. And a few moments later there was a knock on Dagger’s door. “Come in,” she said. 0 A voice spoke gutturally and the do“ swung open, framing the ullut, uni est man she had ever seen, reason of the long, silken roho lu and the peacock's feather in his mn- darin’s hat—itself a commentary upon the Republican regime in China. face, too, was long and gaunt, its slant eyes bright as an eagle's and as crudl, his nose, which flared at the noemh, hooked in a predatory beak.
