CARPET BEATING ANISSUE IN BERLIN Police, in Anti-Noise Cam- paign, Strike Snag in Time- Honored Custom. By the Associated Pross. BERLIN, August 28.—A system of Boiseless carpet beating s wanted in Germany. The police in their anti- nolse crusade have struck a snag in the time-honored German custom of beat- ing carpets in the courtyards on Fri- @ays and Saturday from 8 a.m. unin- terruptedly until 5 p.m. : For the smacking of floor cdverings Wwith a carpet beater in the hands of a sturdy German or German woman, sometimes even two, certainly supplies s much uproar as any motor exhaust or machine gun. Ten hours of such suffices to dlapel all thoughts of rest or relaxation, A8 many f8reign tourists ving in pensions have found out to their sorrow. No Remedy Discovered. As long as the German custom pre- vails of laying carpets loosely on the floor as rugs no solution seems to offer itself. Neither the police nor news- pers have so far suggested a remedy t.he noise that would justify the po- Uce passing a new ordinance prohibit- hz the nerve-racking custom for all Qu- “mgenious eritic in the newspa- pers proposed municipally controlled carpet-cleaning establishments, calling for and delivefln: ‘weekly, like laundries, eleaned rugs and carpets for a nomi- nal fee. Another Suggestion Advanced. Another suggests beating carpets, in- stead of in the courtyards, on the roofs of apartment houses, from where the noise would be disseminated upward gnfl the dust carried off by air currents of entering the windows. Meanwhile “the Yollu are beating time in the hope of finding some way out of the dilemma. BIRTH CERTIFICATE ALTERING CHARGED Counsel for Attack Suspeats Al- leged to Have Had Vie- tim's Age Changed.
