Mencken, spokesman for bachelorhood and scoffer at matrimony, became a benedict yesterday. ‘Though his marriage to Miss Sara Powell Haardt of Ballimore and Mont- Ala., had been scheduled for mber 3, she and the editor and frrepressible critic decided to escape wpealous attentions of friends and were married by an Episcopal rector at an Episcopal Church, that of St. Stephen the Martyr. Only their immediate families and a few friends were present. Mencken of Oil City, Pa., and the latter’s wife. “Sage of Hollins Street.” Mr. and Mrs. Mencken have taken an Apartment in & section of the city dis- tant from his lifetime home opposite Union Square, from which he is known locally as “the sage of Hollins Street.” ‘The bride, a graduate of Goucher College, Baltimore, and a resident here several years, has written for periodicals, and recently her first novel was accepted for publication. In applying for a last week Mencken gave his age as 49 and Miss Haardt's as 32.
