WOMEN PROTEST CHANGE IN STAMPS Martha Washington’s Figure May Reappear During Bicentennial. “The only woman ever to be pictured on a regular United States postage stamp — Martha Washington — again may regain the honor which has twice been snatched from her. ‘Women protesting to the Postmaster General over the removal of her head from the 4-cent stamps on May 19, to make room for one of Willlam Howard ‘Taft, see in the prospective issue of ‘Washington bicentennial stamps for | 1932 a chance for the lady of the cap | and fichu to regain her philatelic Pprestige. Officials Will Consider Appeals. Post Office officials sald the appeals of the women would be given due con- | sideration. They do not, however, see | any chance for her re-instatement on a regular stamp issue. The bicenten- nial stamps will be commemorative ones which are of a limited issue to honor some important event. Two other women have been honored by such stamps—Pocahontas and Queen Isa- beila of Spain. It was as a woman subject for a regular stamp issue that Martha Wash- ington stood unique and it is this honor that many women of the country have « been urging the Postmaster General to return her. Post Office officials point out, however, that Mrs. Washington's head still appears on the reply post- cards and bids fair to continue thereon. Historic Stamps Also Demanded. To complaints of the women that the | American Indian might have been re- moved from the l4-cent stamps or the buffalo from the 30-cent ones, instead of taking Martha Washington from the 4- cent kind, the officials argue that the removal of these other subjects would eause dissatisfaction among persons ‘who are continually urging more stamp ition of America’s scenic and his- toric subjects. While her husband and Benjamin Franklin held serene sway on all regular United States gv ps from 1908 until 1922, Martha Washington has had a varied stamp career. She first appeared on the 8-cent stamps in the regular 1901 issue. But in 1008 she was de- throned and not until January 15, 1923, did Martha's cap and fichu bob up'l again. This time she was on a 4-cent stamp. e LA A e LOCAL WEST POINT GRADUATES ASSIGNED Eight of 16 New Officers Ordered to Army Posts in Mary- land.
