OIL MERGER FIGHT HEARINGS STARTED @Government Claims Standard- Vacuum Act Threatens Competition. / By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. July 1.—Hearings in the Government's suit to prevent a pro- posed merger of the Standard Ofl Co. of New York and the Vacuum Oil Co. were begun yesterday before Pred L. Wil- liams of St. Louis, a special master in chancery. John Lord O'Brien. assistant to the Attorney General, said in opening the Government case that while for con- ‘venience the litigation begun in 1906 and ending with the dissolution of the parent Standard Oil Co. would be re- ferred to as the “old case,” there was nonsep-num between it and the new suit. The Government charges that the proposed merger would eliminate all competition between the two com- gnles and violate the decrees issued the 1906 suit. John D.
