Judging the future by the past, such a call is likely to come along soon. Conversation with various local bank- ers - indicates that the Washington banks will make a pretty good showing, pernaps reveal a fair increese over the last call made on March 27. Recently there have been reports that deposits have been increasing steadily and that a new attitude toward thrift was born shortly after the Wall Street crash last November. This effort on the part of bank de- positors o save more money has been especially notable in the savings banks and the savings departments of the national banks and trust companies. ‘The number of new accounts started in recent wecks in local banks- has been_gratifying, bankers say. Savings usually increase during the Spring of the year as depositors provide for va- cations and other expenses, some of this money being drawn out during the Summer. Deposits reported on the next bank call will be drawn down somewhat by payment of the intangible tax which is due for the first time on July 1. Bank- ers also state that some funds have been withdrawn by people who are un- ployed. How much this will re- duce the total deposits of some 43 banks is hard to say. . Montgomery Joins Broker Firm. G. M.-P. Murphy & Co. announce that Warwick Montgomery has become a member of their Washington staff Mr. Montgomery is well known here, having been born and raised in Wask ington. For eight years he was in the Teal estate business, specializing in in- vestments and management of {gust funds. In the Spring of 1929 he ent the brokerage business with Harriss & Vose. He will be located in the down- town office of the.company, at 1510 H street northwest. Local Dividends Declared. ‘The board of directors of the John H. Wilkins Co., coffee merchants, have declared the regular semi-annual divi- dend of $4 per share on the outstand- ing_preferred stock and a dividend of $150 per share on the outstanding common stock, both dividends payable July 10, 1930 The Continental Trust Co. paid a dividend of 1% per cent to shareholders of the company on June 30, the secre- tary announces The list of J ily 1 local dividends was a very long one today. Nearly every bank in the city paid a semi-annual or quarterly dividend today or yesterday. The Washington Stock Exchange sheet shows that a host of other corporations ! also made interest disbursements. Heard in Financial District. H. G. Hoskinson, one of the vice presi- of the Riggs National Bank, is taking his annual vacatfon. He is spending a part of the time at the Blue Ridge Rod and Gun Club. The District Bankers' Association is planning for expansion o* the work at headquarters, as was voted at the recent annual convention at Asheville, N. C. It is announced that Brooke, Stokes & Co. will handle the sale of the re- cently issued Public Service Trust shares in this city. American exports for first quarter of 1930 were only 4 per cent below the average for similar periods from 1924- 1928, but were 20 per cent under first quarter of 192, according to United States Chamber of Commerce, ‘Announcement was made today py the American section of the Interna- tional Chamber of Commerce of the ap- pointment of Silas H. Strawn of Chi- cago as chairman of the American com- mittee_of that_organization. He suc- ceeds Thomas W. Lamont, whose term xpired June 30. ; Rights to subscribe to the 2350,000 shares of American Telephone & Tele- graph stock offered to shareholders in April, expire August 1. A big subscrip- tion is likely with the stockholders, who now number approximately 500,000, taking the offer. COAL OUTPUT RISING Increase of One Per Cent Regis- tered for Week Ending June 21. Bituminous coal production, while still materially under the figures for 929, registered an increase of 1 per nt for the week ended June 21, as pmpared with the previous week. Out- t for comparable periods is given, as pliows, by the Bureau of Mines. ‘Week ended June 21, 7,900,000 tons; revious week, 7,986,000 tons; same reek of 1929, 9,199,000 tons. —_—- One hundred houses a day are being ected in London, NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE Received by Private Wire Notice—All stocks are sold In one hundred-share lots excepting those designated by the letter s (658) which shows those stocks to be sold in odd lots only. ~Trev.19%0—~ High.
