16 OCEAN FLYER FAILS IN 18 LIFT TRIALS Erench Pilot Seeks Another Brazilian Port for Afri- can Flight. By the Associated Press. NATAL, Brazil, June 12.—After try-| ing 18 times to lift his seaplane from ne waters of the Potengy River since | Bunday night Jean Mermoz and offi- | glals of the French Aero-Postal Co. de- | elded yesterday to try another port %or the take-off to Africa. i Mermoz, noted French aviator, car- ried Europesz. mail from the west coast | of Africa w Natal in & fast flight last month, but has been obstructed by much trouble in his plans to cross the | South Atlantic with South American mail. Aero-Postal officials decided yester- day to send the mail accumulated for Mermoz' return, now three days, late, to Senegal by the next regular dispatch | boat. ! Meanwhile, Mermoz flew a land plane | to Parahyba, south of here, and_prob- ably will take-off from there for Dakar, | Senegal, next week. At Parahyba he | will have a straight run of about 4'; miles, and probably will be able to lift | his heavy ship without difculty. 22 MORE KOREANS SEIZED IN FIGHTING Round-up in Manchuria Follows| Death of One and Wounding of Two in Alleged Plot. By the Associated Press. TOKIO, June 13.—Twenty-two alleged | Korean terrorists were arrested today following a fierce engagement with the Japanese consular police near Lung- chingtsun, in the Chientao district of Kirin Province of Manchuria, the Ja- panese consul for the district reported. One of the Koreans was killed and two were wounded during the fighting. Today's arrests brought the total growing out of the disorders in the Chientao district to 40. Two Koreans were killed and one arrested two days ago at Lungchingtsun, at which time police officials declared Kin, one of those killed, was ringleader of & group of Koreans allegedly plotting the bomb- ing and burning of Japanese consulates and factories throughout the area. | The Chientao district is just across the Tumen River from Korea. The present series of disturbances there be- gan May 31 with an attack by Koreans on several Kirin towns in which Ja- panese have industrial and other in- terests. FIRES THOUGHT SET Two Simultaneous $400,000 Damage in Winnipeg. ‘WINNIPEG, June 12 (#).—Fire today destroyed the Vetcraft workshop, a large warehouse operated by the civil re- establishment department. Almost simul- taneously another fire swept the lumber yard and plant of the Caledonia Paper 2 Box Co. and spread to the plant of the Prairie City Oil Co. where several of the smaller tanks in the storage yards exploded. A drenching rain, which followed a night of high wind, helped firemen bring the blaze under control. ‘The fires, belleved to have been de- liberately set, caused damage estimated at $400,000. Blazes Cause | RESIGNS IN YEAR New President of Connecticut Col- THE EVENING lege Dissatisfied With State. STORRS, Conn., June 12 (#)—Dr.| @eorge Allan Works, who less than a ! year ago came here from Chicago to| become president of Connecticut Agri-| cultural College, announced his resig- nation today. He will sever his con- ! nection with the college at the close of | the regular term and return to the Uni- | versity of Chicago as a professor. | Dr. Works in a statement indicated | that he was dissatisfied with the atti- 1 tude of the State toward the college. | His policies called for the development of the academic aspects of the institu- | tion, while the State sought to develop | it as an a.gncul'urnl college. Automobile n‘zhlm!ions in New Zea- land during the first quarter of this| year were greater than for the same! riod of 1929.
