Where five years ago there reposed a yast waste of swail and swamp at th. southern extremity of Albany today there rises the nucleus of a mighty port, destined some day to become one of the greatest grain ports of the West« ern Hemisphere, according to Governe ment officials. With the Hudson River navigable to ocean vessels for 120 miles above New York Oity, there remained only & stretch of 30 milés from the City ef Hudson to Albany to be dredged. accomplished, the Hudson made deeper thronugh that section, there would re- sult an ocean ship channel all the way from the sea to Albany. Congress voted moooooo for the deeper Hudson, and for three years dredges under Government contract have beben tearing up the bottom of te river. The authorization calls for a channel 27 feet deep, 400 feet wide through rock and 300 feet through soft material. Actually the channel is bee ing dredged for a depth of 39 feet, enough to accommodate more than 85 ae:deont of all eargo bottoms in werld e. . The ship chanuel swtends frem Al- bahy to a potns below the City of Hud- son; thence southerly only shoal dredg- | Ing is necessary to make the Hudson | ready for deep-sea vessels. ‘The $20,000,000 being e: to ! make Albany a world sea) will ore- ate & mighty funnel through which will flow the grain of the West.
