400000 CHINESE | SOLDIERS MASSED | $Sharp Fighting Is Reported Imminent on Honan Front After Lull. By the Associated Press. SHANGHAIL June 3.—After an ap- parently brief cessation of hostilities be- teen the Nationalist government lnd’ the Northern Alliance, which is seeking to create an independent government in North China centering at Peiping, advices from the Honan province zone of police today indicated renewed fight- | ing is imminent. Dispatches indicated that at least 400,000 troops might oppose each other on_the Honan front. Despite the multifarious claims of each group claiming victories, advices intimated that the opposing armies continue virtually deadlocked along the Haichow-Tungkwan Railroad across Honan province. Nationalists Retreat. The Northerners seemingly were hold- ing a slight advantage, reports dis- closed, having forced the Nationalists to retreat as far east as Kweiteh, In the northeastern part of the province. The Nationalists were reported to have increased their forces to at least 150,000, indicating that Chiang Kai- 8hek has ordered a general advance and lending strength to the belief that renewed hostilities are imminent. Hostllities in Shantung Province along the Yellow River in the vicinity of Tsinan also seemed likely. The Northerners during the last week have threatened Tsinan, causing foreigners there to perfect plans of defense or evacuation in the event that that should become necessary. Troop concentrations were being con- ducted in that area, the Northerners seeking to bring Shantung into their al- liance, while the Nationalists were just as determined to hold the Northern Tebels north of the Yellow River. A third battle line is extended along the Peiping-Hankow Railray southward to Chengchow. The Nationalists claim their forces are steadily advancing on this front, while the Northerners as- serted today that they had shattered the Natlonalist threat against the Northern headquarters at Chengchow. Sharp Fighting Expected. ‘With the open profession of the Na- tionalists’ intention of renewing the at- tack against the Northern allies, sharp fighting on_all fronts is generaily an- ticipated. The Nationalists are particu- larly seeking to penetrate the enemy territory north of Chengchow, planning to destroy the Peiping-Hankow Railway Bridge over the Yellow River, 18 miles north of Chengchow, thereby crippling the Northerners' principal avenue of supplies from the north. Similarly, the Northern forces are seeking to protect the bridge and have airplanes, artillery units and anti-air- craft guns strategically located in the THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
