D-16 = ROVERNOR COSTING CANADA HUGE SUM intenance of Residence Travel Expenses Large in Dominion. Special Dispatch to The Star. OTTAWA, Ontario, May 1—It is costing Canada “plenty” these days in maintaining Viscount Willingdon, gov= ernor general of this Dominion and personal representative of King George. Not only does the governor receive & salary of $50,000 per year, but he is given a magnificent Tesidence whose Upkeep is maintained to & great extent y the people. Py e ement_tabled in the House of Commons by Fernand Rinfret, secre- tary of state, shows that the expendi- ture on private railway cars for the governor general for the last six years fas cost the federal treasury no less than $178,03851. Two new cars used by the governor general and Vicountess Willingdon, purchased in 1927 ~and 1928, cost $204,495.27, but $92,750 was lowed on the old cars. A ton Campbell, progressive member for Mackenzie, Saskatchewan, declared Vesterday, when the statement was read, hat the expenditures for maintaining Rideau Hall, stately Ottawa_residence of the governor general, had been steadily mounting and that it was time %o call a halt. He added that he would have considerable criticism to offer, especially in view of unemplyment in is country. e fiowing are the large costs of maintaining Rideau Hall as taken from the auditor general's report and cited Cam| 00t ‘;us 402 1022, $260,000; 1023, $260247 4, $200319: 1925, $263/941; 1926, $253.710; #1007, $192,3817 19028, sas’l«e 1929, $440,857. M. Campbell further pointed out that the adoption of the European plan of furnishing another residence for the governor general at the Citadel at Que- bec City had cost $300,000 to fit up this Summer residence.
