GAUSE OF FARMERS i in;e Has Come for Agricul- tural Protection, He Tells C. C. Delegates. BY JOHN F. SINCLAIR. Maybe the farmers know it, and maybe not, but their cause was never better championed than it was yester- day, when Alexander Legge, chairman of the Federal Farm Board, presented the case of the hard-pressed farmer before the annual meeting of the United States Chamber of Commerce. B Plus SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. ON EASIER CREDIT U. S. Group and Other Prime Issues Gain in Active Trading. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 1.—Bonds mlde an immediate response today, both in increased trading ln\l higher prices, to the lower rediscount rates abroad and intimations that this would be followed by another cut in the Federal reserve rate of rediscount in New York. Act- ually bankers’ bills and time money were easier, which increased the advantage tn buyers of ities over lenders money at current rates. ‘The first to the new condi- tions came, as it always does, in the high-grade issues. Government bonds and Treasury notes were all stronger. The long term 4%s advanced %. First mortgage rails were up fractianally, but the greatest improvement and most de- mand appeared in the newer 4% and 4% per cent issues, such as those of the St. Paul, Southern Pacific, Chesa- peake & Ohlo, Nickle Plate, Frisco and Rock Island. Junior issues were also stronger, with a rally of a point in the new Erie 58 from the figure to which they declined when the syndicate was dissolved and substantial gains in Chicago, Great s, Missouri Pacific G. Western :rzlhnd u and Oregon & Washing- to! Convertibles were not much benefitted by lower money as the tendency of the s',ock market was irregular to lower. Ex- ceptions in this group were Texas Cor- poration .55, Philadelphia & Reading 6s, Atchison, Bal and Royal Dutch 4Y%s. Both of the tele- Pphone company’s convertibles were soft. e ractional m Dodge Goodyur 5s, Brooklyn-Man- halun Transit 6s, a gain of a point in Interborough 5s and a decline of 2 points in Third Avenue 4s reflected con- ditions in this de it of the mar- ket. United States Rubber 5s were not much changed with the announcement of & new issue of 6 per cent notes to retire the 7'4s maturing August 1. Noneofumlmlndllnluuum much benefitted by the reduced discount rates abroad. Japanese descriptions were steady. There was a slight improvement In prices and tone of German munici- pals, public utilities md bank mortgages.
