The men with whom he mapped America’s victorious war plans during the World War, the diplomats and statesmen who were his intimates while on service in foreign lands, and men high in America’s official life gathered this morning for the last rites for Maj. | Gen. George Barnett, commandant of the United States Marine Corps during the World War, at the Church of the Epiphany and at the final resting place of the famous soldier, Arlington Na- tional Cemetery. Gen. Barnett died in the United States Naval Hospital Sunday of pneu- monia following a long illness of heart trouble. At the Church of the Epiphany this morning Rev. Z. Barney Phillips, rec- tor, assisted by Rev. Sidney K. Evans, chief of chaplains of the Navy, offici- the section of Arlington Cemetery re- served for graduates of the class of 1881 of the Naval Academy with full military honors. ‘The military escort of Marines and Fort Myer soldiers at the burial rites Gen. Barnett's home, 1712 R street, the Marine leader's body lay in state for the many Washington friends and associates, who personally offered their condolences to Mrs. Barnett and other morning, immediately preceding the funeral service at 11 o'clock at the church, private funeral services for Gen. Barnett's family were held at the R street residence. Gen. Barnett was 70 years old. He had seen service in nruuuuy every Marine post in the United S and had spent many years at m un ves- sels of the Navy and in Marine outposts all over the world. For his service in the World War he received from France the Medal of the Legion of Honor and the Distinguished Service Medal from the United States. FISHERMEN DROWNED Seven Perish as Boat Is Smashed on Rocks Off Spanish Coast. CORUNNA, Spain, April 30 (®).— Seven fishermen lost their lives yes- terday in the sinking of the fish- ing smack Mariucha, which foundered off Point Candela after grounding during a dense fog. The boat had been smashed on the rocks by heavy seas. ‘Two sailors and the master of the vessel were rescued.
