SHANGHAI, April 30.—Chinese and foreign authorities of Shanghai an- nounced yesterday they were ready to prevent any possible disorders on Labor day, May 1. It was considered that Shanghai presented a peculiarly favor- able position for radicals to create dis- turbances as the result of the tramway and bus strikes now going on. Authorities of the Chinese city and the French and international settle- ments stated the three areas were co- operating to meet any possible emer- gency. The Chinese clamped down martial lJaw in the native areas, with soldiers patrolling the streets. The ich and international settlements held their entire police forces subject to emergency calls, while additional street {:ltro]s were established to continue hrough Labor day, which has been designated for world-wide Communist demonstrations. —_— After the recent raising of a loan for harbor improvement the Island of Jer- :;ymlnnounced that its total debt is O ANNOUNCING the Opening of a Specialized SPORTSWEAR SALON —showing the smartest styles in silk and wool and knitted ensembles; separate blouses and skirts; typifying the ap- proved styles for Spring and Summer sportswear.
