A preliminary fund of $40.865 was | subscribed toward the $100,000 to be raised for the completion and furnish- ing of the new St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, at a dinner given by the lay- men of the church in honor of Right Rev. John M. McNamara, auxiliary bishop of the Baltimore archdiocese and pastor of St. Gabriel’s, last night in the Mayflower Hotel. Last night's dinner marked the cele- bration of the tenth anniversary of the founding of St. Gabriel's parish by its present pastor. It was attended by 250 men of the church. During the dinner Bishop McNamara outlined the needs of the parish and described the church now under con- struction, which is of classic design, calculated to conform to the program of the National Fine Arts Commission for the architectural development of the » | National Capital. Rev. John F. White, an official of the Catholic Charities of New York City, outlined pi for the organization of a bullders’ society to finance the com- pletion of the church, and the society was formed at once. Very Rev. Igna- tus Smith, O. P, also spoke. Paul De Lany of Philadelphia was master of ceremonles and Wendell Hart, con- cert tenor, sang. At the ‘close of the dinner prelim- inary gifts amounting to $40,865 were announced. Among the larger con- tributors were Mrs. D. J. Dunigan, $5000; Mrs. T. J. McCarthy, M Cecelia Jameson and Mrs, Agnes Dal a joint contribution of $2,500; Bishop McNamara, $2,000; Mrs. John Ruppert, $1,500; George Ostman, $1,500, and Mrs. Arthur Newman Dreyfus, $1, ‘The campaign to raise the remainder of the fund will begin next week. Harry Guggenheim, United States Am- bassador to Cuba, is to take off from Bolling Fleld this afternoon on a re- turn flight to Havana, He will fly in an_observation plane piloted by Lieut.
