FINANCIAL. CURB SHARES SAG. | cororn evs INSELLING DRIVE Uhlmes and Oils Retain Speculatlve Favor in Draggy Market. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER. Associated Press Financial Writer. VORK, April 26.—The curb arket was subjected to considerable week end liquidation today, although speculation for the rise was again Ppressed forward in a few of the utilities @nd the oils. Price trends continued irregular and confusing, as they have most of the week. Trading was inclined to slacken. American Superpower was again n favorite in the utility group, rising to new high ground for the year, above 39. American Gas & Electric shot up about 5 points. Such recent leaders as Niag- ara Hudson, Electric Bond & Share and United Light A, however, failed to make progress, and Commonwealth Edison lost a few points in & small turnover. Gulf was a leader in the oil grcrup, selling up about 3 points, to withi striking distance of its high for 1930 ©Ohio Ol was firm, but Standard of In- diana eased. RETAIL SALES SPOTTY ALL OVER COUNTRY @eneral Business Improving, but Still Far Behind Last Year's Records. @Gpecial Dispatch to The Star. BOSTON, April 26.—Although gen- eral business has improved somewhat over recent months, it has failed by a considerable margin to reach a level comparable to that of last year, ac- eording to this week's United Business Service Report. In fact, n{m being corrected for sea- sonal trends, business in March de- clined from that of February and a further slight decrease is in prospect for April. Factory operations have ex- mdzd somewhat in April and building d up, with contracts thus far runnmg only slightly under those of a year ago. But as a general thing it cannot be said that the usual sea- sonal expansion has been enjoyed. Automobile output has increased steadily since last December, but is still approximately 30 per cent under 1929. Further gains in industrial oper- ations are likely to prove of only mod- erate duration, and the level will prob- ably not approach that of last year until Fall. Local sales conditions are very “spotty” all over the country. Most re- cent statistics indicate that the States of Delaware, Iowa, South Dakota and Oklahoma are relatively the best sit- uated, but even in these States some %t.flcu are faring much better than ers.
