D-8 CITIZENS AGAINST TEACHERS'CHANGE 2% Progressive Association of Georgetown Opposes Trans- fer From Kindergartens. Insistent that the provisions in the District appropriation bill to transfer a number of kindergarten school teachers to elementary grades should be changed, the Progressive Citizens' Association of Georgetown last night adopted a resolu- tion, calling upon the Senate subcom- mittee to restore the item of $126,000 for elementary teachers, as recommended by she director of the Bureau of the Budget. Mrs. J. D. Sullivan, the president, at ‘whose home, 1519 Thirty-first street, the meeting was held, explained that the House has adopted the measure, de- signed to transter 18 kindergarten teach- ers, in line with a recommendation of the Bureau of Efficiency. “This means tearing up our whole school system,” Mrs. Sullivan asserted, “by placing spe- clally trained kindergarten teachers in grlde schools to do work they are not tted for,” Another resolution adopted by the as- sociation urged appropriation immedi- ately of sufficient funds to insure com- pletion of the 11 additional class rooms at_the Gordon Junior High School. ‘The association congratulated Mrs. Ruth Hanna McCormick for winning the Republican primary election in Illi- nois in her race for the Senate and ex- pressed its felicitations at the election of Miss Etta Taggart as a member of the Citizens’ Advisory Council. Mrs. McCormick and Miss Taggart are mem- bers of the association and the secre- tary was directed to write congratula- tory letters to both of them. - Mrs. Sullivan appointed this commit- tee to serve with the George Washing- ton bicentennial group: Mrs. Marie Moore Forrest, chairman; Miss Tag- gart and Mrs. Fred T. Dubois. ‘The association recommended that ‘Thirty-third street be made a boule- vard where the fire engines travel and that stop signs be erected at N street. Indorsement was given the resolu- tion of the Dupont Circle Citizens’ As- sociation to work for abolition of the smoke nuisance. . New York Reds Hit Whalen. NEW YORK, April 15 (#) —Com- munists at a mass meeting in the Bronx Coliseum Sunday denounced Police Commissioner Grover A. Whalen and his “ruffian” policemen. At the box office stood a squad of po- lice guarding $15,000 which the Com- munists took in as admissions. ‘The Communists had appealed to po- lice to protect the money from possible hold-ups.
