THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTO! Bull Fighting Thrills American Franklin, Brooklyn Youth, Tells of Determination to Become Matador It Couldn’t Here s the story of the boy from n. U. 8. A. wh 0 has_won_ the g Tecent accident in the Madrid bull ring, Which nearly cost his life. BY SIDNEY FRANKLIN. MADRID, April 14.—Well, this Brook- | Iyn bull-fighter, speaking of myself, has | had his “blood baptism.” as we of the bull-ring speak of accidents such as I had recently. And now watch me! That's what every one in Spain Is doing. They want to see if the Brook- | lyn boy, this curious American who | likes to fight bulls, has lost his nerve because he lost a lot of blood. | My next appearance in the ring, and | that’s coming soon, will be in Valencia | All the fans are waiting for it impa- tiently. Have I lost my courage be- cause that Madrid bull hooked me? Has | my skill been affected? That's what | they want to know. . | As for myself, I'm eager to be at it | again. I have no fear, and the ex- perience I have had should have helped me, rather than the contrary. We g;ooklyn boys bounce up smiling, you oW, Blames Self for Accident. That goring I got in Madrid was all | my own fault. It happened March 16. Just a week before I had made a good showing in Valencia. There, because of accidents to my comrades, I had to dispatch four bulls myself. I got away with it nicely. Then, in Madrid, my first bull got me. I was caught and tossed, and, as the newspaper cable told, 1 was seri- | You see I had de- back ously wounded. veloped a habit of turning my on the bull, and walking away from | him. ‘This time I misjudged my adversary. and the accident resulted. That is the great difference between bull-fighting and other sports. The slightest misstep or_misjudgment may bring death. I don't remember what happened Just after that bull rammed me. But they tell me I was operated on right away at the ring infirmary. Since then I have been treated daily. Now I'm in great shape again. I'd like to fight right away, but my wound hasn't en- tirely closed and the doctors won't let me fight for a week or so. ‘This seasori looks mighty bright for me. Barring any more accidents I'll be kept very busy appearing all over Spain and in parts of France. This is “big shot” stuff. I am now getting con- tracts that will bring me sums varying from $800 to $1,200. That's a lot of money in this part of the world. Plans Bloodless Fights in U. S. Next Winter I'll probably make a tour of Mexico or South America. And after that I hope to begin preparations for bloodless bull fights in the United States. Won't my Brooklyn buddies sit up when I prance into a bull ring back home! Curiosity as much as anything else got me into bullfighting. While I was in Mexico in 1923 some Spanish friends vowed that to be a bull fighter a fel- low had to be of Spanish blood or of the Spanish colonies. I made up my mind to find out. My first step was an interview with Gaona, Mexico's greatest bull fighter, one of the three best the sport has ever produced. I told him I wanted to learn bull fighting, not professionally, but for my own entertainment. The idea of an American wanting to learn to fight bulls struck Gaona &s so funny that he invited me to parlor practice with him. This consists of go- ing through the movements of the sport with cape or mulets, as if there were an animal in front of you, and it keeps one limber, giving an easy grace to_the movements. We did this a few hours daily for two i weeks. Then I was sent to Don Julio Herrera of the Xajay Ranch, where some of the best Spanish blooded stock is raised. Real Estate Loans (D. C. These would last me three or four days. By then I should }mow whether I could learn bull fight- ng I must confess that when I stood before the first animal that charged I gldn't have the slightest idea what to 0. whole thing dawned on me. If I moved I was sure to be tossed again, but if I stood still and just drew the cape by, coupling it with the speed of the animal's charge, then he really didn’t see me at all and passed right by, wheeling and charging from the other side in exactly the same ner When T picked myself \up_the | continuously. Finally he became con- vinced he could no nothing to get his horns into that moving object, which is the natural termination of a series of passes. Ability Impresses Spectators. I tried this on the next animal, and not only astonished those present, but even more than amazed myself. Four days later, bruised and batteerd, 1 returned to Mexico City, happy in the knowledge that now I woull rove to my friends that I could really fight bulls and in their own fashion. That Sunday I made my debut in the Chapultepec ring, where I not only proved my point, but learned that I immensely enjoyed what I was doing. The amount of pleasure I got was what eventually decided me to go in for the sport professionally. | Then, the money one can earn at bull | fighting seemed just about the same a: advantage that here was a sport that | really had the enormously attractive ele- ment of desperate chance. | Spring of 1924 saw my formal entry | as a professional all over Mexico, I fought about 15 times that season.
