Tt TRAFFIC OFFICERS OF ETHER CALLED Summoned to Headquarters to Dis- cuss Means of Smoothing Broadcasting. ‘The traffic cops of the ether will mobilize at headquarters here this month to discuss with the high poten- tates of radio ways and means of smoothing the rough spots in broad- casting. From eight of the nine ethereal “beats” into which the nation is divided will come the Federal radio supervisors at the call of the Federal Radio Com- mission. The deliberations to begin April 28 may last a week. The com- mission makes the regulations governing radio operations and the supervisors who are attached to the radio division of the Commerce Department see that they are carried out. The conference will devolve upon the broad question: “What's wrong with broadcasting’ Within its scope is the ulv‘lllbflll'y o( shifting station assignments to eliminate interferences, of reducing or increasing the number of cleared or exclusive channels, and of curtailing or stepping up the present maximum broadcasting power of 50,000 watts. The commission for weeks has been considering the broadcasting question, which is in a constant state of flux. ‘There is a strong movement for curtail- ment of the 40 cleared channels and for a drastic slash in power. Before de- ciding this vexations problem the com- mission agreed that it should get the views of the men who actually deal with broadcasting problems in the field. Secondary issues of the unofficial agenda embrace complaints received by supervisors, co-ordination of the work of the commission and the radio division, study of interference with re- ception on each of the 90 broadcast frequencies, suggested lmprovel:::::u in transmitting equipment of service areas of stations, advisability of requiring stations to “warm up” on dummy antennae before going on u'u air, and thus eliminate a specific mited interference, and the ldvmbfll'a of making it mandatory that stations maintain closer adherence to their h'e- which results in cross-talk and hewro- dyning. Supervisors have been asked by Wil- liam D. Terrell, chief radio supervisor, to bring full records for the delibera- tions. Tt will be the first conference called for this specific purpose in the commission’s three years of authority. Broadcast engineers of the commis- sion, headed by Chief Engineer C. B. Jolliffe, will present their views at the conference. In addition to Mr. Terrell and William E. Downey, assistant chief, the radio supervisors called to attend the conference are’ Arthur Batcheller, with headquarters at New York; Charles C. Kolster, Boston; L. C. Herndon, Baltimore; Walter Van Nostrand, jr., Atlanta; Theodore G. Deiler, New Orleans: Bernard H. Linden, San Fran- cisco; H. D. Hays, Chicago, and 8. W. Edwards, Detroit.
