O. doward, commissioner of the Freedmens Bureau, at the close of the Civil War, aided in the establish- ment of both institutions, Dr. Moton sa. Gen. Samuel Chapman Arm- strong was assigned by Gen. Howard to direct activities for the benefit of the Negro race in the territory of Vir- ginia and conceived the idea of a school as a medium for the solution of freed- men’s problems. Howard Tukes Presidency. The presidency of Howard was of- fered to Gen. Armstrong. He declined and Gen. Howard assumed the office. Both men considered vocational and scientific training necessary. Hampton Institute, however, developed crafts- manship, while Howard contributed to professional and classical education. Dr. Moton deplored the contention that surrounded the development of the two types of education. It is & conceded fact today, the speaker declared, that both types o. schooling are essential to the betterment of any race. There is room for development of brains and skill for those needs which contribute to intellectual and spiritual progress, Dr. Moton advised. Carry Responsibilities. “The Negro,” Dr. Moton declared, "is situated” in the midst of an advanced civilization which has required in the aggregate thousands of years for its de- velopment. “In spite of our limited opportuni- ties,” Dr. Moton said, “Negroes are measured by the same standards, carry the same responsibilities and in spite of all handicaps are expected to meet the competition of larger wealth, greater numbers, more favorable opportunities | and unlimited resources. | “If the Negro survives in such a sit- | uation it must be only as he secures for himself every medium and instrument | of advancement possessed by those | around him.” | Nesw Low Price! The story of his difficulties, and how he met them, bolds interest for men and women, alike, and is told in his own vivid words below: ““The life we lead here in the Park is a strenuous one—the long, exhaust- ing ski trips often requiring ten to fifteen hours of the hardest kind of labor. A man must be in the very best physical eondition to last in this winter work, and husky as I am, I found myself losing out, due princi- pally to my inability to sleep well at night, even though dog-tired. That coupled with all-morning headaches bad me worried. Enemy revealed ““Finally, after consulting a physi- eian, I decided to cut out caffein bev- erages and try the thirty-day test of Postum. Thanks be, that I did. The initial tryout came one cold, blustery night when I arrived at the station wet, cold, and dead-tired from an all- day trip through the snow. A steam- ing hot cup of Postum surely hit the Tight spot, and that night for the first time in weeks, I slept as a tired man should.
