SCHOOL FILM USE | STUDIED BY BOARD Way Is Sought for Utilization of Auditorium—Gymnasiums for Movie Showings. ‘The Board of Education determined late yesterday to find some way to use motion picture machines in the com- bination auditorium-gymnasiums of the elementary schools, although the Dis- trict fire marshal has steadfastly re- fused to approve use of such rooms be- cause they are equipped with movable seats. This decision was reached after a delegation of Woodridge Parent-Teach- || er Association members, headed by Mrs. Phillip Strieby, asked permission to use the halls in the John Burroughs|!| and the new Langdon Schools for the projection of educational films in con- nection with the regular visual in- struction program. Mrs. Strieby ex- lained that students of these schools ive been seeing the films in the Sher- wood Church basement hall, which not only has movable seats, but which lacks most of the fire emergency provisions provided in the school building’s audi- toriums. ‘The board granted the juest on condition that the movable chairs be joined in gangs of three, which pro- posal Dr. Frank W. Ballou, superin- tendent of schools, said was to be tried out at the new Paul Junior High School. At the same time the board ruled that use of the Sherwood Church hall under present conditions be discontinued. Movable Chairs Held Menace. In the general discussion of the use of the auditorium-gymnasium it was brought out that all of the new school buildings either are equip{)ed now with these halls or are scheduled to receive them with the ultimate completion of the buildings. Each of these combina- tion rooms is equipped with a fireproof projection booth complying with the fire regulations, but none has been used. Refusal of the fire marshal to sanction use of the halls, it was explained, was based on the danger of panic in event of any emergency which be augmented by the possibility of -chairs collapsing. It was pointed out that at present most of the schools use motion picture theaters for the visual education pro- gram l-nde:ih;; !undstlol' this purpose are provide parent groups. szmam E.
