Higher Opening Brings Out | Offerings—Utilities Are Again Featured. BY JOHN A. CRONE. $pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YOREK, February 6—Stimu- lated by the Bank of England rate cut and prospects of a reduction being ordered here by the New York Federal Reserve Bank today, the curb, after opéning higher, encountered consider- able profit-taking and slackened sales as_trading progressed. Power and light issues, the early lead- ers on the upside, were the first to ease. ‘This reversal was due to technical market conditions, but may have been ocoasioned by the proposal of a New York legislator drastically to curtail utilities in this State. His statement was used by brokers to recommend switching from New York State to other utilities. Electric Bond and Share went up % point at 98': on 7,000 shares, then backed and fiiled, gradually falling 2 points. American Superpower hovered around 29, or off more than % point. American ‘& Foreign Power also re- acted, but Middle West Utilities and Insull Utility held their early gains fairly weil. The oils ranked second in volume, being led by Cities Service, Indian Ter- ritory and some of the Standards. Standard of Kentucky was up nearly a point and Standard of Nebraska gained a point in response to an extra dividend declaration. International shares featured early trading, = advances including Hydro- Electric, Brazillan Traction, Utilities Power & Light arid’ Ford Motors, Ltd. " Ford Motors Limited was whirled to & record high for the year, following persistent rumors of an early dividend. ‘This depends on procedure of Ford of France and Ford of Germany. Opel, the nearest German competitor, reduced prices today. Fiat Debentures at 21's shewed a gain of % points. New Jersey Zinc Tan up 3% on & few sales before a report on January gains in tons and stocks were made public. Noranda climbed 1!, before meeting realizing. Coppers were some- what better on the belief that present buying may erase the estimated 30,000 tons added to stocks in January. NEW YORK COTTON. NEW YORK, February 6 (#).—Cotton opened barely steady at a decline of 15 to 23 points today under a renewal of more or less general selling, which was evidently stimulated by reports of deelines of Liverpool and Egyptian cot- ton at Alexandria and in the Bombay market. ‘There was trade buying and cover- ing, but it seemed to be quite readily supplied and by the end of the first half hour ‘active months were selling 23 to 25 points net lower. This decline car- ried March back to 15.80, or even with the previous low level, while May and later deliveries made new low records for the season.” May sold off to 16.04 and Octob.. to 16.45, with May at this price showing a decline of 38 points from the high level of yesterday. « _ Liverpool cables said that continental and Bombay liquidation had been ab- by coverings and that the latter had been promoted by the reduced bank rate. The decline in Egyptian cotton was attributed to a bearish estimate of the Sudan crop. PENNSY STO&K MEETING. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 6—Stock- holders of the Pennslyvania Railroad at the. annual meeting April 8 will be lsh_fi: a8 increase in the autho! sm stock from the pres- ent $700,000,000 par value to $870,- 000,000. It is understood that there is no plan to issue any additional stock in the near future, but that as the issue of $90,000,000 authorized last November leaves only about $30,000,000 of un- issued stock, the management feels that future capital requirements should be rovided for. Other matters to come fore the meeting are the leases of the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad and the Western New.York and Penn- slyvania Railroad. NEW YORK BANK STOCKS. Receipts included white and yellow perch, black seabass, jumping mullets, croakers, shad and herring. Shad, a fish much in demand at this season, were not very plentiful today, dealers reported, and high prices pre- vailed, roes selling at 60 and melts at 40 cents a pound. Herring were quoted at 10 cents a pound. Both white and yellow perch, not plentitul, were offered at 30 cents, the mullets and bass selling at 20 and croakers at 1212 cents a pound. Small quantities of flounders and trout, also from North Carolina, were offered at 20 cents. Other Fish Supplies. Spanish mackerel, caught in Florida waters, were in plentiful supply at 25 cents, Boston mackerel, frozen, selling at 15. Butterfish, also frozen. were offered at 18 cents. Three sizes of Canadian smelts were offered at 25, 30 and 40 cents. Fillet of haddock, in good demand, was quoted at 20 cents, and dealers also had halibut and salmon to offer at prices quoted most of the Winter season. Crabmeat continued searce and high. It was reported that receipts of crab- meat were much smaller than usual and higher prices prevailed. _ Cold weather is reported to have affected the industry at Biloxi, Miss., from where so_much choice meat is received. Very little of the meat has been received from Crisfleld, Md., packers recently, according to reports, and to- day’s advices from New Orleans men- tioned a price of 90 cents for lump and 65 cents for the white meat. Shrimp, more plentiful and in good demand, claimed attention of retailers and consumers. The green shrimp was quoted at 30 and the cooked at 60 cents a pound. Dealers had plenty oysters to supply the trade at prices quoted the past month. A shortage in receipts of eggs and an increased demand resulted in a further stiffening of the market this morning, but dealers continue to be- lieve receipts will be heavy as soon as the country roads are in better con- dition and anticipate cheaper prices. Prices paid shippers for current re- ceipts were quoted by different dealers at 38, 39 and 40 cents, a majority of them “fixing the price at 39 cents. Hennery eggs were quoted at 1 cent higher, the difference between the two grades, according to dealers, being slight. An increase of 31, cents a dozen on eggs was reported in Chicago yesterday, according to reports of local dealers. The Chicago market, they state, has some bearing upon the market here— more so than the New York market, merchants say. Butter prices, slightly lower earlier in the week, advanced 1 cent today. Prints were quoted at 39% and 40%, while tub butter was quoted at 37% and 38%. Vegetable Receipts. Increased receipts of kale and spin- ach, much of the latter vegetable re- ceipts coming from Texas, was reported this morning, and the price of spinach dropped to $1.50 a basket, Most va- rieties of vegetables were in liberal sup- ply in the commission house district this morning, but movement was not especially active. Oranges and grapefruit also were re- ported much more plentiful, dealers saying stock on hand this morning probably was heavier than at any time the past several years. Oranges, as to size and quality, were quoted at $3.50 and $4.50, the grapefruit selling from $3 to $5. Dealers also reported increased re- ceipts of strawberries from Florida, best quality selling at 45 to 50 cents a quart, some not so fancy going at 25 and 35 cents, Alligator pears, not so plenti- ful, were offered from $9 to $10 a box. Five-pound boxes of rhubarb, prod- uct of hothouses in Canada and Detroit, Mich., were quoted at $1, and dealers nad pineapples, pears, grapes, apples and cranberries among other fruits to offer the trade. Hothouse cumbers were offered at $2.50 and $3 a dozen, and dealers had peas, string beans, lima beans, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, okra, eggplant and other vegetables iamong the day’s offerings. e GRAIN MARKET. CHICAGO, February 6 (#).—In a rapldly fluctuating market wheat values here scored sharp upturns during the late dealings today. Commission houses became active buyers after an early rush of selling that forced prices down to new low records for the season. Russia was reported to be trying to ar- range foreign bank credits on offers of 250,000 tons of export wheat, but it Was asse! in usually well-informed quarters that Russia has in reality no grain of conse%xenee to spare, and that her need is cash with which to purchase machinery. The reduction was due to the recent inflow of gold and improvement of the national monetary situation, which as- sisted recently in reductions of the bank rates of Germany and France. The action of the directors in re- ducing the rate took the market some- what by surprise in view of the fact that sterling exchange for some time has been weakened. Easier money in New York, raising hopes of reduction oi the Federal reserve rate, apparently in- duced the authorities here to take the oPportunity of giving trade the benefit of a lower rate and anticipating the Federal reserve action, which the money markets seem to think will not be de- layed long.
