By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, Pebruary 3.—Chicago and Cook County had lots of company on the financial rocks today. Several suburban governments had joined them, all in the quandary of pay rolls to meet without monies with which to do it. The South Park board, controlling the system of South Side parks, an- nounced & 15 per cent reduction of wages. Its 1,300 employes, including 320 policemen, agreed to the “tem- | porary” cut rather than to accept the alternative of a reduction in the num- | ber of employes. This is the first time | the South Park board, which is State | controlled, has indicated the financial | shoe was pinching. City employes, payless for a month, may have some important news tomor- | Tow, when the council is to decide whether to ask the citizens’ relief com- mittee for $6,000,000 to meet Police, | Pire and Health Department pay rolls. Seeks Loan Completion. Alderman John S. Clark, chairman of the city council’s finance committee, will ask "aldermanic sanction for a ceting between representatives of the | city and of the relief committee, rela- | tive to completicn of the loan. ‘The relief committee has insisted that before it wiil get money for the city the administration must give as- surance that the money will go only for ¢ | the payment of pressing bills and that Se, | rigid economy be exercised hence- forth. Mayor William Hale Thompson and his supporters have shown no en- ll',\,usiasm toward the relief committee offer. The $6,000,000, Clark pointed out, would meet pay rolis until February 15. For the remainder of this month, an additional $2,000,000 is required; from that time on, until the reassessment is completed and tax money begins trick- ling in, $4,000,000 a month will be needed. Only for Pay Rolls. The figures only meet pay roll de- | mands. ‘There are millions in unpaid bills, Clark said, causing many mer- chant creditors to be “pretty hard up,” but the alderman added that they have “to wait.” ‘Tax officials have pledged their ear- nest efforts to complete the reassess- ment, exteni the taxes and have the bills in the mails by June 1. ‘The suburb of Mount Prospect par- ents have contributed cash to schools in operation; citizens of Ar- lington Heights are considering simjiar |action; in Blue Island, the night | schools have been closed to keep the day schools going; Flossmoor is bor- rowing from its water and sewer funds to meet other expenses; in Homewood, the teachers are paid up to next Wednesday, but after that the, school | board knows not where money for the | pay roll is coming from.
