BUILDING {Purified Ventilation System Adopted for Commerce Department. Presh, water-washed air will be fur- | nished to the thousands of employes in the new Department of Commerce Building through equipment now being installed. A huge air washer is being put in the basement of the building. through which air from outside will be drawn by fans. The air will pass through this huge washer, while streams of water play constantly, eliminating dust and dirt As explained by S. T. Seceley of the Loftis Plumbing & Heating Co., in- stallers, the system is constructed to draw air from wells around the founda- tion of the building, suck it through the washer, carry it through galvanized sheet-iron air ducts into all parts of the building. entering the rooms and hall- ways near the floors. Foul Air Eliminated. Foul air is to be drawn out of the rooms by a set of fans situated in the attic and connected to rooms by another set of big air ducts. In Winter the cold air brought from outside is to be warmed before entering the air washer, and then warmed again before being sent through the ventilat- ing system. In Summer the washing of hot air from outside is expected to lower its' temperature. In addition to this extensive venti- lation system there is being installed spe- cial equipment for conditioning air going to rooms where special humidity and temperature are needed, such as the stor- age rooms for map paper used by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. For these rooms, including the press room, there is equipment for humidifying and de- humidifying the air and for heating or refrigerating it.
