TUSKEGEE, Ala, January 1.—Ten | persons, seven colored and three white, | were lynched in the United States in | 1929, according to a report made public yesterday by Dr. Robert R. Moton, colored educator and principal of the ‘Tuskegee Normal and Industrial In- | stitute. § This was one less than in 1928, six less than in 1927, nine less than in 1926, and seven less than in 1925. Lynching by States in 1929 was re- ported as follows: Florida, 4; Kentucky, 1; Mississippi, 1; Tennessee, 1, and Texas, 3. | Offenses charged against the lynched persons were reported as follows: Crim- al attack, 3; writing insulting notes, | 32; murder, 1; wounding man in alter- | cation, 1; ‘'wounding officers of law, 2; charge not reported, 1. Six of the per- sons lynched were taken from the hands of the law, five frem jail and one outside jail. Dr. Moton also reported that there | were 27 instances during the year #1 which officers of the law prevented lynchings hree of these," his report said, “were in Northern Staes and 24 in Southern States.
