BEDTIME STORIES %7552y Happy Jack. Persistence seldom knows defeat; You'll find it very hard to beat. ~—Farmer Brown's Boy. Farmer Brown's Boy was wondering how Happy Jack the Gray Squirrel had | come out in his fight with Spooky the h Owl for the possession of a house which Farmer Brown's Boy had made and put up especially for Happy Jack. Late the afternoon before Happy Jack had had possession of the house, while Spooky sat disconsolately out- side. Farmer Brown's Boy wondered what had happened in the night. This he put up in another tree over nearer the Old Orchard and waited to see if Happy Jack would find it. Happy Jack did find it. He knew that that house was meant for him, just as he knew that the other was meant for him. He inspected it thoroughly, in- side and out. Then he barked happily and forthwith began to carry in dry leaves as fast as he could. He meant to have possession of that house be- fore any one could get ahead of him. My, how Happy Jack did work You know, there isn't a lazy bone in y Jack’s whole body. By the time jolly, round, red Mr. Sun began to get ready to go to bed behind the Purple Hills, Happy Jack had a snug, comfortable bed all made inside that house. He had quite forgotten his disappointment in losing the other house—the one that Spooky had driven him out of. Little people of the Green Forest and the Green Meadows are that way. They quickly forgot their disappointments and their troubles. g Just after the Black Shadows took possession of the land, Spooky the Screech Owl came out of the house. [t was hunting time and he was hungry. He flew straight over the Old Orchard and there he hunted for mice. He visit- ed the edge of the Green Forest. He even went over to the barnyard. He quite forgot everything but his appe- “ite and the need of catching enough mice to satisfy it. It was just at the break of day, as Spooky was preparing to go home, that he discovered the n‘e:d }ml;se ufm Farmer Brown's Boy put, up for Happy Jack. Spooky blinked those big eyes,of his two or three times. That house was 50 exactly like the one that he had that he almost suspected a trick. He almost suspected that that house had been moved. But when he flew over to this new house and dis- covered that inside was a bed of dry leaves, and heard the mm scolding of Happy Jack Squirrel, who had just awakened, he knew that this must be another house. don'twant Jour " hause " smepped on’t want your ,” sni Spooky, “I can't use but onme house, and that I've got.” “Then go away and stay away!” growled Happy Jack. “If you won't bother me, I won't bother you.” “Fair enough,” replied Spooky.
