1VE STOCK HONORS & TAKEN BY IOWANS Five Blue Ribbons Won by, Farm Youths in Junior Contests. By the Assoclated Press CHICAGO, November 30.—Iowa's | farm youth walked off with the lion's | share of honors at the international live stock show today. They won five blue ribbons and the only championship awarded in the junior live stock raising contests, which overshadowed the other events of the day's program. Waldo Mommsen of Miles, Towa, an 18-year-old 4-H Club worker, led the JTowa parade by exhibiting the cham- pion baby beef of the show, an Aber- deen Angus yearling, which previously had won the blue ribbon for its class. Stockmen recalled that the grand champlon of the entire stock show last | year was a baby beef champion which | had been exhibited by an Iowa farm | boy and were wondering tonight if his- tory was to repeat itself. Earned Own Money. Mommsen, one of 10 children, bought | his champion Angus with money he | had earned in club work. He paid 15| cents & pound for it when it weighed 450 pounds. It now weighs 1,200. He raised it to championship caliber on a mixed diet of corn, oats, clover and alfalfa. ‘The reserve champion baby beef, ¥ of Manning, Iowa; Eugene Alexander of Indisnola and Emma Goecke of State ter. a, sister of Clarence Goecke, who won the grand champion- ship last year, won two first-prize rib- bons for two of her Herefords. One of these finished third in the champion- ship selections. Tilinois Is Runner-Up. Stuart Peterson of Galesburg, Luther Carswell of Rochester and Edwin Brown of Aledo gave Illinois the posi- tion as runner-up to Iowa in winning blue ribbops. Each of these lads ex- hibited prize-winning baby beef. Others in the spotlight were Myron Mayhew, farm boy from Aledo, Iil., whose Hampshire Barrow was adjudged the best in the swine section of the junior livestock feeding contest, and Ernest Moore of Eaton, Ind.,, whose pen of three Southdown lambs was picked for first place in the sheep division. Eaton's lambs previously had won the grand championship at the Indiana State Fair. | A special prize for the county exhibit- ing the best group of three cattle in | the baby beef contest was won by Marshall County, Iowa, home of the| Goeckes. Marshall won over Mercer County, I, and Tippecanoe, in Indiana. Towa also exhibited the best group of baby beef, with Illinois second and In- diana third. The intercollegiate live stock judg- ing contest was the other principal ai- traction on the day’s program, but the judging lasted so long, the results wiil not be available until tomorrow. The Oklahoma A. and M. team, which won last year. had another strong team en- tered today. .
