DISPUTE VIRGIL'S BIRTHPLAGE SITE Italian. and British Scholars Disagree as Celebration Approaches in Spring. By Radio to The Star. ROME, November 30.—The exact site of Virgil's birthplace threatens to cause #s much discussion as formerly that of the spot where he was buried. With the latter question settled. it is now agreed that illipo, near Naples, holds this honor in the cave which is now ing saved from collapse. Italian and British Virgilian scholars now differ about the birthplace. Next Spring the bi-millenarium, with a vast program of festivities planned, will see a pilgrimage to different places. ‘The British writer Conway is or- ganizing a pilgrimage to Calvisiano, whereas the Italians consider Pietole, near Mantova, as the birthplace, where & vast Virgillan garden is now being Jaid out on the banks of the River Min- cio. Calvisiano is 50 miles distant, near Brescia. One Virgilian scholar, Senator Albini, has raised a protest and points it examiniag ancient writers, Mantua is linked vath Virgil's name in the following: ‘“Mantua Vergilio Gaude f Ovi ‘Marone Felix Mantua Est of Marizal,” “Mantau Musarum Domus of Silio Italico.” 5 3 Another ,rut argument is that the t himself lov-d Mantua with a deep eeling and paid filial tribute to this city in his poems. It is well known that his father’s farm was on the banks of the Mincio. This land was confiscated when an edict ordered the sale of all land in Cremonia, in the vicinity of Mantua. Virgil obtained restitution owing to the kind offices of powerful friends, In the meantime he took his in his small country home with the old teacher Siron. If he was born 30 miles| { from Mantua it is hardly likely that he | | could have describd the countryside as | too distant in those days. Virgil exalts | Mantua in many pastoral poems. Be- | sides, mention is made. in the Aeneade, on whose ship the emblem was “Mincio, | Daughter of Benaco.” For this reason there is great hope that the two points | of view may become one before the fes- | tivities. begin next year.
