° THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, 1929. D. C. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, EXPERT OPINION. .= ON GASOLINE COST Bureau of Standards Direc- tor Sees Prices or “Pre- mium” Seldom Justified. ’ “Prlm paid for premium gasoline | are Qhflm Justified by the results ob- tained, K. Burgess, director of the Bureau of Standards, has replied in_request for information on the 80~ called “high test” gasolines: made by the American’ Automiobile Association, it was announced today. ‘That motorists who bllndly accept the “=nti-knock™ lines may be wasting the extra money they pay lor such fuel and increasing the cost of operation of their car without a commensurate gain efficiency in their machine is Dr. urgess’ view. . As a matter of fact, Dr. Burgess holds, the “high-test” gasolines do not give as much mileage per gallon as the |~ ordinary fuel in Summertime. Cold weather, however, the Bureau of Standards holds, reveals advantages in vanti-knock” fuels, such as easier start- | ing and better engine performance. Result of Recent Tests. Recent tests have been made at the bureau to determine the relative values of ordinary gasoline and the premium | brands. The tests have shown that gravity no longer is an indication of the volatility of the fuel, despite thel fact that a large amount of the fluid fuel is sold today on that basis. The bureau devised apparatus to permit the graging of automobile fuels as to their periormance under ordinary engine eflndl(lon&. classification along these lines 'Du!d “give the motorists some infor- mation about volatility,” the bureau an- nounces, The bureau states, on the subject of “anti-knock” fuels: “In general lt should be emphasized that there is very little to be gained by the .use of anti-knock gasolines in cars Which do not knock when ordinary gasol is used. No increase in mile- Benefit in performance is to be expected under these conditions.. On the wntnry, a fuel which knocks ap- rmch & given engine will give power lnd less miles per ,uhn than one which does not kn “High-Test Gasoline” Dfiel_‘. Of “high-test” gasolines the bureau says: “In Summer weather there is prac- tically nothing to be gained by the use of high-test gasolines. In fact, one Is liable to secure less mileage per gallon with the more volatile gasoline under these conditions. In cold weather the TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS.
