'FIN INVESTMIENT BOND PURCHASING GAINS, List Still what by Renewal of Liquidation. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 8—While bond prices were mostly higher today, there were enough exceptions to this to make it evident that all the liquidation incidental to the recent decline in stocks had not evaporated. However, the class of bonds showing gains indi- cated . that there was a great deal of urely investment purchasing going on gy individuals, insurance companies, banks and traders who are taking ad- vantage of the present low level of bond prices to acquire holdings for public sale when prices again advance, as they are convinced they will ‘The technical soundness of the market is shown by the amount of new financing planned for the near future. Most of this is municipal, but the fact that such offerings now have a market at ylelds around 415 per cent is an in- dication that bond prices generally are due for a substantial advance. One offering today was $3,000,000 Orleans Parish school board, New Or- leans, La.5 per cent due from 1967. ‘The bonds are priced on a 4.80 per cent basis. The city of New York's offering of $60,000,000, postponed recently ow- ing to the unsettled condition of the market, is expected .to be reoffered within 10 days. Public utilities were the feature of the high-grade list today. American Telephone 5'5s, Philadelphia Co. 5s and Columbia Gas 5s (May, 1952), were all higher. General Public Service 548 were off 1% points. Rail dc<cr1pt\ons ‘were quiét. Anglo-chflenn s were down 2% points, in a single sale of a large block. Dealers had numerous varieties of fish to offer the retail trade, including Norfolk spots, croakers, jumping mul- lets and fish of the varieties shipped from Boston and New Jersey markets. ‘| Few fish also were received from Florida, but heavy shipments from there will not come until cold weather. Oysters Plentiful. Oysters were plentiful and of splendid quality, dealers reported, and were in good demand. Selects. were quoted at $2.50 and standards at $2.25 a gallon. Price of shell stock depended entirely upon the size and quality of the oysters, Eggs also were in demand, strictly fresh hennery stock being so scarce that some retailers quoted them as high as 85 cents a dozen. Haulers from nearby Maryland and Virginia this morning dld nct have their usual heavy ship- ments. Poultry dealers this morning had fairly heavy supplies of turkeys from nearby Maryland and Virginia, many of them small Spring turkeys, and they also had a few large ones. Frozen turkeys were offered the trade, some of the supplies from the West proving exceptionally attractive, and prices were reported fairly cheap. Heavy receipts of chickens, ducks and keats also were reported. They were in fair demand at prevailing prices, dealers reporting prices the same as those quoted yesterday., Meat receipts werc more than ample to meet demands, an easing of the market being reported. ‘Tangerines, first of the season, came from Florida, and attracted much atten- tion, increasing the already long list of fruits offered. No. 1 tangerines were offered at $2.50 and $3.50 a box, No. 2 stoék bringing $1.50 and $2. Oranges, grapefruit, honeydews, pears and grapes continued in plentiful supply at prices that have prevailed the past few days. Vegetable Receipts. Anise, sald by dealers to be one of the leading salad vegetables, was received from Norfolk, Va.,, and was offered at $1 and $1.25 a bushel basket. Brussels sprouts, received from Long Island, N. Y., was offered at $6 and $6.50 a crate. Dealers had wax beans from Norfolk to offer at $1,50 a bushel. There was practically no demand for them, how- ever, Washington consumers usually de- manding the green variety. Few home- grown tomatoes were offered on the farmers’ line this morning at $1.25 and $1.50 for 2-peck baskets. Commission merchants had plentiful supplies of shipped-in tomatoes from California, prices depending upon size and condition of the vegetable, They also had numerous quantities of other vegetables, some homegrown and some shipped-in stock. A slight easing of the butter market was reported this morning, the de- crease, however, not being great enough to have any material effect upon the re- tail market. Prices of most commodities this morning were the same as prices quoted yesterday. Dealers reported a slight improvement in business this morning, but trading, they stated, was not heavy, although re- ceipts of practically every commodity, with the exception of eggs, were fairly avy.
