Four years ago Barron’s Weekly con- ducted a contest on the best investment “sclections for a widow supposed to have 2%100,000. It is interesting to note that A. Vere Shaw of Shaw, Loomis & Sayles, Who gave a talk on investment before ,some 800 Washington women the othcr ‘ day, was one of the contestants and that "his ‘selections have made a rather star- tling record since that time. The finan- " cial weekly recently reviewed the mar- ket action of the various selections dur- . ing the intervening four years, Mr. Shaw suggested 17 conservative common stocks and 12 boad issues. At the end of the period and before the “ecent stock crash the common stock sclections had an appreciation in quoted values of 236.8 per cent and had re- turned an income on the investment of 37.6 per cent. The value of the sug- gested stock and bond investments when “’chosen was $99,935, and not long be- Tore the recent market tumble had ad- \'Sanced to $221,003. ", Ore naturally wonders what common "Kocks were selected. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, ‘November 8.—Stock prices rallied briskly at the o) of today's market and then fell back sharply on .what appeared to be the sale of support stock purchased yester- day and profit-taking by professional traders, who were disinclined to stay long of the market over the two-day holiday. Trading was back to & normal volume, although the exchange was again opened only for three hours. Early Gains. Early gains in the leaders ran from 1 to 10 points, with a few specialties showing larger advances, on buying in- fluenced by the sustained recovery in yesterday's session, and the unex- pectedly large drop of $656,000,000 in Federal Reserve brokers' loans. The demand quickly tapered off, however, and prices began to recede around the end of the first hour, many of the early gains being cancéled, and a number converted into losscs of 1 to 5 points. Call money renewed unchanged at 6 per cent, with the demaund moderate, and time money was in fair supply at the same rate for all maturities. The day’s business news was rather colorless in character, although most of the earnings reports publish'd made favorable comparison with a year ago.
