By the Associated Press, LONDON, September 21.—Clarence Hatry and three associates in the stock exchange sensation here were charged at the Guildhall today with conspiracy to obtain £209,000 ($1,045,000) by false pretenses. The four men were refused bail and remanded until September 27. - The crown prosecutor intimated fur- ther charges are likely to follow in the case. The other accused men arrested with Hatry are Edmund Daniels and Albert E. Tabor, company directors, and John G. Dixon, secretary. Hatry, Daniels .and Tabor all had passports which they obtained yesterday and which the police now have. The case created great excitement in Lon- don’s financial center, and the court- room was jammed, while crowds gather- ed outside. $40,000,000 Estimafed Loss. The stock exchange committee sus- pended permission to deal in the stocks, after the slump was estimated to have cost shareholders $40,000,000. It is understood the Bank of England is taking a hand in efforts to meet a diffi- cult situation. It is feared losses will be widespread, and that many stock brokers will be involved in them. * Hatry consulted lawyers and on their advice visited the director of public prosecutions, accompanied by fellow directors, Edmund Daniels, John Dixon and Albert Tabor. All made state- ments and subsequently went to the headquarters of the- city of London | police. This visit was equivalent to | voluntary arrest. It was stated they re- mained at police headquarters last i night pending formal charges against : them., ! Insurance Office Clerk. i _ Hatry was a clerk in an insurance of- | fice just before the World War, but was dealing in millions before he was 30 | years old. He became very wealthy. | Then reaction came and the slump that : followed the boom of 1919 and 1920 1 proved disastrous to thousands of | shareholders of his companies. He re- covered and made several successful 4 transactions, one of the latest being acquisition of a new company called Steel Industries of Great Britain. It has issued capital of about £8,000,000 ($40,000,000). This company, it is stated, recently acquired the shares of the United Steel Companies, Ltd. ‘The stocks placed under the exchange ban are Corporation of Wakefleld, 434 per cent; Drapery.Trust, Associated Au- tomatic Corporation; Corporation & General Securities; Investment Trust, Photomaton Parent Co. and Retail Trades Securities. $25,000,000 Total Capital. ‘These issues have a total capital of more than $25,000,000. Besides the Hatry concerns, the prohibition affects | the shares of two issues with which Hatry was formerly connected, the | Drapery Trust and City of Wakefield | Corporation. The suspension of deal- ings in° the last named, a British | municipality, is an exceptional step, but the Wakefield stock was issued through | the Carporation & General Securities | Co., involved in the group. The stock | was considered virtually a gilt-edged security. The suspension of trading will have the effect of protecting share- holders who otherwise might have rid themselves of their holdings before an opportunity of arriving at the true po- sition had occurred. | Many Cities Hit. | . Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Hud- | dersfield and Sheffield are mentioned among places where financial and busi- ness interests are expected to suffer considerably. The Marquis of Winchester, who is 1chalrmfln of three of thz Hatry com- | panies and the Drapery Trust, sald | that he was not the least worried. “We are as anxious as anybody to salve as imuch from the collapse as possible,” he said. “There are still very good as- sets.” An an indication of the extent of the slump, shares of the Photomaton | Parent Co. dropped from $3,25 to less than 60 cents. MANILA STUDENTS . FIGHT DRESS RULE | | Inexpensive White Cotton Clothing Decree Arouses Ire of Pupils. MANILA (#.—Almost all of the students at the University of the Philippines - are protesting against a |law which requires that they attend school attired in inexpensive white cot- ton clothing, but only one student, Miss Rogario $ison, has been exempted from the provi¢ions of the statute. She won exemption because of a religious Vow. Miss Sison related that she made a vow to Our Lady of Carmen that she would forego dances, parties, flimsy dresses and fibwing skirts and that she would wear the robe of the Carmen devotees, Dean Beniteb of the univer- sity thereupon permitted her to attend classes in a brown robe. Much controversy has resulted from enforcement of the regulations, which have been in force a little more than a year. Recently 3,000 students signed a petition to the House of Representatives urging that the law be repealed.
