12 20 DOURHOBORS HELD ASVACRANTS Refusal to Vacate Camp Near - Neison, B. C., Followed | by Arrests. By the Associated Press. ! NELSON, B. C., September 21.—Two | hundred Doukhobors who have been | encamped near this city were arrested | today by 30 police officers and booked | on charges of resisting arrest and vag- | cy. Acting under instructions of the pro- vincial attorney general’s department, following a report by an official from Victoria on the sanitary conditions of the Doukhobors' camp, provincial police notified the 200 or more “sons of Iree- dom” to move. The Doukhobors re- fused to move and John Cartnel, gov- ernment agent and provincial magis- trate, read the riot act. which also ailed to secure their obedience. A physical clash occurred when Ma- loff and other leaders, whom the police first took in hand, resisted arrest and the officers at first were thrown back. ‘The police, however, concentrated on these men and the body of adherents on seeing them disappear into a big car made no further resistance. About 30 officers, including provincial and city police and specials, took part in the ar- Tests. Under nominal guards the Douk- hobors, chanting weird Russian hymns, were marched to the provincial jail. ‘The first group taken were booked as resisting arrest and the others on charges of vagrancy. ‘The Doukhobors’ claim that they had no home was met yesterday by an offer to them of Porto Rico, one of the lum- ber camps of the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood. The arrests were directed by provincial police in- spectors. Mayor R. D. Barnes also was present and city authorities lent both moral and physical support. SEES METAL RIVALING DIAMOND'S HARDNESS | Metallurgist Predicts Mineral Prod- ucts Ten to Fifteen Times Stronger. CLEVELAND (#).—Metals, diamond- hard and 10 to 15 times as strong as those now used, are visualized by Dr. Zay Jeffries of Cleveland, noted metal- lurgist and president of the American Boclety for Steel Treating. Strength of metals is being gradually increased by the new insight into metal- lic structure given by the X-ray's pic- ture of “atomic society” and_ other modern analytical methods, Dr. Jeffries | says. Tungsten, for example, assumes & strength of 650,000 pounds to the square inch when drawn out into a wire one- thousandth of an inch in diamet Glass, drawn to the same small diam- eter, increases in tensile strength from 15,000 pounds to 492,000. Research has revealed that tensile strength and hardness of metals can be increased if the crystal particles of which they are constructed are made as small as possible, with the faces of the crystals arranged as nearly parallel as | possible, making them less likely to &lip apart. This is accomplished by fine drawing of wire, by dissolving one metal in an- | other and letting one of the metals | separate out from solution in a fine | precipitate, by heat treating, by form- ing chemical bonds and by mixing fine particles of a hard compound or metal with another metal as a binder. Some of the newly formed theories are being applied with success in pro- duction of aluminum alloys for air- plane and motor parts, new hard sur- faces for steel and superhard cutting metals for hard steels and stones.
