PANTAGES MURDER TRIAL NEARING END Expert Witnesses Examined After Answering 1,500-Word Question on Death Cause. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, September 20.— Efforts of the prosecution to prove that Mrs, Lois Pantages, wife of Alexander Pantages, vaudeville impressario, was intoxicated when her automobile col- lided with a car driven by Juro Roku- moto last June, and that the death of the Japanese a few days later was a direct result of the accident, ap- proached a climax today. Mrs. Pantages is on trial in Superior Court in_charges of second-degree murder. District Attorney Buron Fitts threw defense plans into apparent tem- porary confusion yesterday by person- ally entering the case and winning, after a dramatic appeal to the court, permission to reopen the State's case. Pitts asked and was granted an oppor- tunity to propound to physicians testi- fying for the State & 1,500-word hypo- thetical question asked of defense physicians by Max Steuer, chief de- fense counsel. The defense physicians testified that Rokumoto died under an anaesthetic administered during an operation subsequent to the accident and that his injuries did not contribute to his death. A spirited clash between Fitts and Steuer marked the State's argument for admission of State testimony on the hypothetical question propounded first by the defense. “Let us not forget,” said Pitts, “after everything is said and done, that Rokumoto would be alive today had it not been for Mrs. Pantages here. It is not the doctor who administered the anaesthetic who is the murderer, but Mrs, Pantages.” Mrs. Pantages sat silent under the }in;unchtlnn. but Steuer leaped to his eet. “A mob speech,” he shouted, ‘“not worthy of an officer who is sworn to uphold the law.” Later, after Judge Carlos Hardy had granted the district attorney’s plea to be allowed to re-examine State wit- nesses on the defense's hypothetical question as to the cause of death, tears streamed down Mrs. Pantages' cheeks as five physicians flatly contradicted the defense testimony. Steuer, in cross-examination, failed in an attempt to adduce from the doc- THE .EVENING STAR, 'WASHINGTON, -D. It's by Gil Dobie, and head coach at Cornell: ‘The future of Cornell as a class A college is entirely in the hands of the faculty., If they are going to be bull-headed and insist on the students studying and carrying on s lot of iessons and getting their minds and time off what they are here for, why we will finish where all other - narrow-minded colleges finish, in the cellar. But if they wake up, like Notre Dame, Cali- fornia and Princeton, and realize it's touchdowns we want and not de- grees, it's future coaches we want to turn out and not college presi- dents, then only will Cornell return to its proud place among prosperous universities. But I can do nothing. It’s all in the hands of the faculty. BIG HOTEL SYNDICATE IS FORMED IN NEW YORK Proposes to Acquire Control of 12 Hostelries in United States and Canada.
