NEW YORK, August 28.—With rail- road stocks prominent again today it | was the convertible issues of the car- riers that made most progress and for | a time took the leadership away from the public utilities. Allegheny Corporation 53 were, likewise, strong. Profit-taking in International Tele- phone 4!,s carried them off about 2 points, while American Telephone 4'5s were advancing 3 points, General Pub- Jic Service 31,5 gained 1!, points, American I. G. Chemical 5}5s and Kreuger & Toll 53 advanced fraction- allv as did Philadelphia & Reading 6s. The influence on the market for for- eign dollar bonds of a successful con- clusion of The Hague conference was | slight compared with the importance | of it to continental European loans. While there were fractional gains in French and Belgian issues, liquidation continued in German bo and_in some of the issues of Southeastern Eu- rope. SHOW LARGE GAINS Many Carriers Report Sub- Year’s Revenues. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, August earnings for July and for the first prospects of financing through the issue of stocks by those carriers whose shares are selling at a premium over par, and some dividend ¢increases in the next few months have provided the groundwork on which a strong market for rajlroad securities has been erected. One of the significant developments was the announcement that came from the meeting of the directors of the New York, New Haven & Hartford, at which their qujrterly dividend was raised from 4 to 5 per cent. This was to the effect that lhr company intended to issue stock in 1930 to take up obli- gatlons: due in that year. This {llus- frates the remarkahle change that has occurred in the affairs of a rallroad whose common stock’ last year sold be- low but has since risen over 70| points and is now paying a very re- "inedun!flmendollm this will | g,vn company earnings well above | T eent on the common stock, or Mu the dividend now being paid. It was also reported that the Penn- | dylvania Rallroad would offer its shars holders the right to subscribe to addi- tional common stock -before the end of | 1929. ‘There were rumors that with earnings increasing at the present rate, the directors might raise the dividend on the stock to 10 per cent. In July this road increased its net operating income $4,142,000 and in the past seven | months this item has shown a gain of nearly $18,000,000. ‘The basis of the talk of higher rail- | road dividends was to be found in the earnings statements published in the | last few days by most of the prominent Iroads of the country. One of the | popular “‘rails” this week has been Chi- cago & Northwestern. whose stock has | advanced (o the highest price in 10 years, or since the dividend reduced from 7 per cent. to 4 per cent. For the | seven months period this year North- western's operating income hax in- ereased in an amount equivalent to about 13 per cent on the common stock. | which means that. the road should earn | between $8 and $9 in 1929, or sufficient to justify an advance in its dividend | {rom 4 to 5 per cent. Great Northern, in | the same seven months has expanded its income to the equivalent of 11, per cent on its capital stock, promising | earnings for 1929 of nearly 12 per cent, although these may be shaded in the last five months of the vear, which petiod will reflect the poor erop condi- tions in the territory of the road. Remarkable Showings. Another road that has made an ex- cellent showing is Southern Pacific. whase operating income was 22 per cent lmlhrr for the seven ronthz to July 31, than in the same period last year and equal to an additional 1'; per cent on the capital stock, promising earn- mon and medium, 7.75 to 13.50.
