FESS SAYS HOOVER 1S POPULAR IN OHIO Senator Declares Constitu- ents Pleased by President’s Record to Date. The Hoover administration and its accomplishments to date are heartily approved in Ohio, according to Senator Simeon D. Fess, who returned to Wash- ington today from his home in that State. “President Hoover is more popular to- day than ever among the people of Ohio,” said Senator Fess. “They ap- prove of his farm relief legislation and particularly of the manner in which he selected the members of ta Federal Farm Board, obtaining the services of outstanding men familiar with the problems which must be met.” Senator Fess expressed the opinion that any attempt to attach to the tariff bill the so-called debenture plan forr aiding the farmers would fail. The Government, he said, through the new farm act, has undertaken to help the farmer solve the marketing problem, which is the real problem of the farmer today. The adoption of the debenture plan, which he s®id would be in effect a direct contribucion from the Federal Treasury to the farmer, was no more or less than a dole. If such a plan were adopted for one class, it might easily be demanded and obtained by an- other in the future. Senator Fess said that the British today are having their troubles with the dole which goes to ‘unemployed labor. He argued that if the farmer were given a dole new in the shape of the debenture plan, there would be nothing to prevent labor from obtaining a dole from the Treasury in the future, with its attendsnt ills. Senator Fess called upon President Hoover at the White House to discuss gome matters of apopintments to public office, He v\lll return to Ohio tomor- TowW. RUM REPORTED SEIZED. Thompson, colored, 23 years old, due to be carried out Monday, has been commuted to life imprisonment by President Hoover, after the District Court of Appeals had rejected his new trial plea. Executive clemency was granted on recommendation of the trial judge, the United States Attorney and the At- torney General, who sat mitigating circumstances in the fact that there . were no eye-witnesses to the crime, the conviction having been obtained largely on_Thompson's contession to police. __Thompson_was accused of mumerm.,‘ " Our Invisible Mend Makes Hose Almost Perfect Scuthern Stelos Co. 701 12th St. N.W.
