Honey that's without a stine. Fortune doth but seldom bring. —Old - Mother Nature, Cubby Bear did a great deal of roam- ing about. You see, he was healthy and active, as a half-grown Bear should be. He was full of curiosity. He was for- ever poking his nose into all sorts of places. By th's time he had learned uw ways of big Buster Bear and of Mother Bear and knew how to keep out of their way. It was only now and then that he got a glimpse of them, or they of him. “Some day,” he would say to himself, “I'll be so big that they won't dare try to drive me away.” And then he would long for that day to come. /4 (2: j “BEES!” MUTTERED CUBBY. You know there is nothing that a Bear likes quite so much as honey. If he can find some honey, he is perfectly happy. He will do almost anything to get honey. He will run almost any risk. When he is wandering about in the woods he is always looking for honey, Of course, he doesn't find it often, but once in a ‘while his patience is rewarded and then such a feast as he_does have. It happened one day that Cubby Bear stopped beside a big tree and stood up to see something that had caught his attention. As he stood there he became aware of a humming sound. BURGESS “Bees!” muttered Cubby. I'm not a Black Bear! honey.” He smacked his lips and his mouth watered ever so little. He cocked his “Bees, or | Bees mean other to listen. Finally he made out that that humming sound came from over his head. He looked up. He couldn't see anything but the branches of the tree over his head. Still, he ‘was positive that sound came from high above him. “I wonder,” thought Cubby, “if those bees are living in this tree. If they are, there must be honey up there. Anyway, it ‘Wfll be worth climbing up to find out.” Now, a Bear is an exceedingly good climber, as you all know. I mean, of course, a Black Bear. The Grizzly Bear is not a climber. From the time he was a very little fellow and first started out in the Great World, Cubby had spent much time up in trees. So it really was no trouble at all for him to climb this tree. The higher he got, the louder the humming grew. Cubby's eyes began to twinkle. “They are up here and no mistake!" said he. “Yes, sir, they are up here! I do hope that honey is where I' can get at it. It would be dreadful if I couldn’t.” Up and up went Cubby until he was quite well up in the tree. Then he discovered that there was a long dead place on one side of that big tree and that it was near the top of this long dead place that those bees were going in and out of a small hole. This meant that that tree 'vas hollow back of this dead wood. Down from the hole ex- tended a small crack. It was when Cubby’s nose reached that crack that his mouth began to water in earnest. You see, through that crack he smelled honey. Cubby looked up greedily. He knew what he was in for now. Already those bees were beginning to hum around his head. He knew that if he went a foot higher they would begin to sting; but He dug h's claws in and began to scramble higher, Instantly the bees gave the alarm and on the end of hjs nose. He stopped long enough to brush the bee off and went on. Then the bees came swarm- ing out until they made a black cloud (Copyright, 1929.) Across. . Coasting vessel of the Indian Ocean. 5.
