BALANCE OF TRADE AGAIN FAVORS U. S. Special Dispaich to The Sta: NEW YORK, July 16.—The balance of merchandise foreign trade of the United States in June was again in fa- vor of this country, according to reports by the Department of Commerce, in contrast with the results in May, when imnorts exceeded exports for the first time in three years. The June figures, however, showed that while there was an increase in exports over the same month last year of $9,000,000, the gain in imports was $37,000,000. This made. the favorable trade balance last month only $¢5,000,- 000, as against one of $73,518,000 in the gimilar period of 1928. ‘The total trade of the country last off from both the May month drop] and April levels. In the earlier months imports were influenced by the desire of importers to have their merchandise reach the United States before llll', ! part in helping to relieve the domes- tic money influence in producting high- er money rates in 1928, when the net exports for the January-June period were $373,000,000. These exports in the first half of last year had much to do with deter- mining the policy of the Federal Re- serve Board in raising the rates of rediscount of the Eastern banks in July to 5 per cent. ’ Wall Street Briefs | | By the Associated Press. i A substantial interest in the business of Sharp & Dohme, Inc., of Baltimore, one of the oldest and largest rma- ceutical houses in the country, been acquired by a banking group, it was an- nounced today, which will form a new company of the same name, giving pres- ent stockholders an o] unity to ex- change their shares for shares of the new coneern, which will be headed by A.
