Higher Money Rate Affects| Convertible Issues—U. S. Group Firm. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. 8peciel Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 25.—The 10 per ,¢ent renewal rate for call money . to- day affected speculative bonds, through i the irregular movements of stocks into which they are convertible. It also had & tendency to soften the prices of low- yield mortgages, especially the short aturities. It is expected firm money rates will prevail for another two weeks, and for that reason any movement in bonds is likely fo be postponed, except where they are of the equity type. The sav- | ings banks have been losing deposits through June, as they did in May, and normally have substantial withdrawals after the July interest period. They e not likely to figure as large buy- ers until later in the Summer. % Legal Bonds. The fact was emphasized in one bond market analysis today that legal bonds are commanding higher returns I than since 1870. The return on rail- ,road mortgage issues of this type is from 5 per cent up, while short-term | Tailroad equipments are available from 5% per cent, and one year municipals | are offered at 8 per cent. or a net re- turn to a corporation of better than ' 6% per cent. Government issues stood up well to- day, but high-grade rails were inclined to' sag. Baltimore & Ohio 4s dropped about a point. They have a narrow | market and are subject to wide fluc- tuations. Northern Pacific 4s and 6s were off fractionally. Reading Co. 428 declined a point. After transactions yesterday of about | 1,600,000, or 20 per cent of the bond trading of the day, American Telephone | convertables quieted down and were off a point at one time. Then they rallled. | International Telephone 4158 moved up | three points to a new high record. Missouri Pacific 5'2s, Atchison | Southern Pacific 41, per cent con- vertibles were quiet but strong this aft- | ernoon. New Orleans, Texas & Mexico 88 advanced 1. Foreign Group Dull. East Coast 5s joined the list of bonds at the lowest of the year. ‘Trading in the foreign departments ‘was dull and of little sgflnunu. In , general prices were stea ‘COAL PRODUCTION. They were from all sec- tions of the country, dealers reported, and some of the vegetables from points as far distant as Texas, Florida and California presented an appearance al- most as attractive as some of the home- grown products. It was pointed out that some of the corn from Texas was in as good eondi- tion as much of the similar vegetable from much nearer points. “This i3 due to the treatment the corn receives just after being gathered,” commented a dealer this morning. “It is put through a cooling process and packed for shipment while it is still cool. The result is that much of it is in splendid condition a week or more after being gathered.” Vegetable Receipts. One i 77 Vs ol POWER AND LIGHT SECURITIES LIGHT HERALDED THE DAWN OF COMMERCE HUNDRED years before Christ, the island WO I state of Rhodes stood at the crossways of com- merce. the gold Argosies brought the spices of the East, of Africa, the tin of far-off England and traded in her harbor. Yet something was needed. Demand created supply. A colossal statue of the Sun God, over 100 feet high and holding in its hand a flaming torch, was erected beside the harbor. Now ships might sail by night as well as day. Light had answered the call of commerce. It was 2,000 years before Edison in his little workshop in undreamed-of America brought to industry the incandescent electric light, so that giant searchlights might guide the mighty air-borne commerce of tomorrow. One can only regard the future of the power and light industry on the basis of its past. times a: 1908 to We use today four much electrical energy as in 1915. From 1928 the number of customers of central power stations grew from 1,950,000 to 22,000,000, while revenue from sale of electricity increased from $175,000,000 to $1,770,000,000. The record of the industry suggests the wisdom of investing in well-chosen power and light securities. GreLeT & Co. [ BALTIMORE " WASHINGTON, D. C. BANKERS INVESTMENT BUILDING WASHINGTON, D. C.
