NEWYORCG.L.7 FACING QUANDARY Finding Mayoraity Candidate to Oppose Tammany Held Problem. BY LEMUEL F. PARTON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 15.—Who'll bell the cat—or the tiger, as the case may be? With the Republican city conven- tion set for August 1, leaders have been unable to find any fusion candidate for mayor against Mayor Walker, who un- uestionably will receive the backing of Tiger is resting ‘ammeny, and the peacefully, but alertly, on the munic- ipal doorstep, with no very alarming chance of being disturbed for some time $o _come. Charles H. Curry, appointed leader of Tammany six wev: ago, is a fast but careful worker. Without noise or friction, in the manner of the late Charles F. Murphy, he has pulled to- gether. & somewhat disaffected organi- zation, started his scouts working in the remote, cruml boroughs, dis- ciplined a few recalcitrant braves and brought the outfit back to old-fashioned fighting trim, No Disturbing Forces. The late and memorable excitement, i which new Tammany was whelped, seems to be a fale that is told. If there were, or are, disturbing forces tending fo upset the traditional politi- eal control of New York City and shift fhe State in the national political line- up they do not appear either on the kurface or in the undertow. The lines of political demarcation appear to he just about what they were before the st presidential campaign. The Republicans have been abun- @antly supplied with ammunition, but most of their big salvos have been duds. Early in December Kingsland Macy, chairamn of the Suffolk County Re- publican committee, tried to shove the Rothstein case into the Legisiature, pos- #ibly, recalling the fact that it was the | rosecution of the killers of Herman thenthal which made Charles 8. Whitman Governar of New York 16 years ago. At the same time United States Attorney Charles H. Tuttle was ballooned for mayor, he. having done some excellent work in the Federal end | of the Rothstein cese. But the move | to the Legislature got side-tracked and the talk about Mr. Tuttle subsided. The Queens sewer scandal and the #treet cleaning scandal also looked like good political material, - but nothing much was done with them. The bank- ruptcy scandal was too much of a non- partisan affair for .political usage. And now Gov. Roosevelt has spoiled the City Trust Co. investigation, so far as political are eoncerned, by ap- pointing Supreme Court Justice James C. Cropsey as committing magistrate. Justice Cropsey is not only a Repub- ( Mean, but a jurist of unassailable in- ity. His appointment was made as the bank crash, involving mil- s, been singled out as grade *A” political ammunition. Frank H. ‘Warder, former State superintendent of banks, has been arrested on felony sharges. Representative Fiorella H. La Guardia has keen campaigning several weeks, bat it s lered unlikely that he ‘will receive either Republican or fusion nomination. He has not always been politically orthodox and the party lead- ers are for some more sedate eandidate, like Gen. Jameés G. Harbord, president of the Radio Corporation of America. Former Mayor James F. Hy- lan, busy and vociferous, is as usual a eomplication. The Republicans are - yearning for #nother John Purroy Mitchel, (Copyright, 1939.
