THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 1 l Among thé Folks in History——By Gaar Williams Now You Ju5 ] 'MARCH AROUND TH OTHER WAY - SANT Y0U/ SEE WE 60T 2ACE CURTAIN PRYIG AND STRETCHING IN HERE ! HOUSE CLEANING A FELLA HAD D BEDTIME STORIE A Strange Fight. Welcome Robin finally left Mrs. Robin at the nest and flew over to the same ‘perch from which he had started his attack on the stranger. His head still ached from the bump he had re- cetved when they met. Hardly had he alighted when there was the stranger again. Once more rage filled the heart of Welcome Robin. But this time he didn't fly so headlong. He really took note of things this time. And he dis- covered that the stranger was over on the window sill of one of the windows at Farmer Brown's house. THERE WAS SOMETHING BETWEEN THAT STRANGE ROBIN AND HIM- SELF. Welcome flew over there, and the in- stant he alighted on that window sill he struck and struck hard at the stranger. The stranger was ready and ‘waiting for him and struck hard at the same time. For a second or two Wel- come wondered if he hadn’t broken his bill. At the same time his neck felt as if it had been almost snapped. He was almost dazed. Then he forgot it, for there was the stranger! And again Welcome Robin struck, his wings half spread as he did so. Again he hit some- thing hard. Now he made a discovery—a real dis- covery. There was something between Z3 . He pecked and pecked at the glass. Every time he pecked the stranger did the same thing. Welcome beat at it with his wings. So did the stranger. Wel- come actually forgot_that there Was anything between them. They just fought and fought until they were so tired that they couldn't fight any longer. | And all the time neither had touched | | the other. | | At last Welcome Robin just had to stop. He was tired out. He was ex- hausted. He sat on the sill with his wings drooping and panted for breath. But when he glanced at the stranger he saw that the latter was quite as badly off as he was. He, too, was sitting with his wings drooping and panting. Some- how, this_encouraged Welcome Robin. When he had rested somewhat he once more resumed the attack. The stranger on the other side of the glass was all couraged. After he had rested a bit he flew back to the tree where the nest was being built. He looked back at the win- dow. The stranger had left it. ““Anyway,” declared Welcome, “I know where that fellow is. He is inside Farmer Brown's house.” ! “Who is inside Farmer Brown's house?” asked Mrs. Robin, coming up Just then. “That stranger,” replied Welcome. “That stranger that I've been telling you about. He's in that house and he's afrald to come out. He knows what I would do to him if he did.” Welcome was boasting now. Mrs. Robin gave Welcome a queer look, but she said nothing and flew | about her business of hunting for soft for that nest. That was the thing that interested her most.
