MOVIES AND MOVIE PEOPLE BY MOLLIE MERRICK. HOLLYWOOD, Calif. May 28.—For ‘time being & deluge of color will terate the cool black and white Pproduct of the studios. Marilyn Miller will star in a color Pproduction. Irene Bordini's brunette loveliness will be seen on the color screen. Sally O'Neill is featured in a color al,c‘:um which is among the pioneers of new vogue. ‘The revue makers are largely respon- sible. Imagine the average follies or galeties or nonsensicalities, or what- ever you want, all done in grays and ‘whites and blacks. It would be terrible. ‘The revue has thrived on the gor- geousness of its color, the shapeliness of its girls, the ability to tread the danger line without stepping too far across. The music and libretto have| Wkl'yl been more or less a matter of ! Louise Fazends, who has had to dye her hair red to play in one of these color pictures, says she Will never go back to the old dark brown. And that's an idea. Miss Pazenda insists that she has a buoyancy of spirits and an altru- istic outlook upon life with red hair that the brown-haired woman cannot feve. ”&Ilck Mamie—the henna! The rumor bugs insist that Alice | White has been taken out of the role of | Nanette which she was preparing for | months past. A star of musical comedy will be engaged to do the role. Movie | men are learning to demand sophisti- | cation in their dancing steps. Alice White is at present doing the story of a five-and-ten girl. She has the kind of charm required to carry such g character off exceedignly well, and, facially and figuratively speaking, PERSONAL HEALTH SERVICE BY WILLIAM Sunburn and Tan. A coat of tan was formerly a calamity | in the eyes of fashion. A few years | 8go I recetved lots of inquiries from readers who had incautiously acquired a little tan while on Summer vacation and wished to be rid of it in a hurry. ‘Today no such inquiries come in. Now the young people are counterfeiting a coat of tan when they are unable to ac- quire a natural one. It 18 not necessary to be burned in order to become tanned. Physicians using ultraviolet light, whether from the sun or from a lamp, strive to avoid even mild burning of the skin treated. Some authorities on the use of ultra- vielet light for the prevention of rickets in infants believe .the treatment is most efficacious when the dosage is so small and so infrequent as to prevent even tanning. Heretofore physicians have assumed that the process of tan- ning was at least a good index that the ultraviolet light was accomplishing the desired cure. At any rate, in hospitals where sun bathing and artificial ultra- violet treatment are used extensively, the children with all forms of tubercu- losis do develop a deep mahogany tan of the whole body surface as the tuber- culous lesion or process becomes ar- Your Baby and Mine BY MYRTLE MEYER ELDRED. Prospective and nursing mothers are told that their diets must contain tooth and bone making material, so that their own teeth will not decay, for nature is gealous that the child may not be deprived. In many instances the mother hasn't the faintest idea in what foods the awe-sounding ealclum and phosphorus may be found. She knows that calcium is lime. and she jumps to_the natural conclusion that she must have lime water, or baby must have it, as 8 means of supplying -his system with this necessary mineral. ‘The mineral elements are in all the eommon foods. We can get iron in iron pills and iron tonics, but we can get an even better rly and one more twemn' and J} used by the bodv in eggs, raisins and spinach and other foods rich in iron.. The same is just as true of the lime and calcium. There is more. lime in a quart of cow's milk than in the same amount of lime water, and one is gobbled up by the body, as it were, and turned into good bones and strong teeth, while a large part of the other merely acts as an anti-actd. In thinking over her menu for the months of pregnancy and later during the lactation period, the mother need not tear her hair worrying about lime or calefum. She must know what con- stitutes a ‘good diet at this time, and if she Jjust glance at the following classifications, she will understand ‘without argument just why she is told to drink a quart of milk or use other she will do nicely. Producers accus- tomed to throwing any beauty into any kind of role are a bit puzzled these days when they cannot do the same with the audibles as they did with the silents. A dumb girl whose mind was on her clothes, her beaux.or the powder that wasn't on her nose could be placed at | the right camera angle, lighted -super- latively, a man’s arms put about her at a passionate angle, and the country would heave in sympathetic approval at_the net result. Not so today. You can't murmur “I love you" and think of your dress- maker’s bills at the same time. It takes a bit of concentration. And, try as they will, the 'h'ls of the movie world shouldn’t be expected to develop in a| few weeks the singing and dancing | technique musical comedy stars have been perfecting for years. A pale girl in duck trousers, a sweat | ehirt_ and blue beret stepped into a Catalina curio store to purchase sou- venirs. “Please send them to the hotel.” she sald. “The name is Garbo—G. Garbo.” The clerk wrote. Bystanders rushed ‘fm‘! and aft to stare at the lady. The |lady herself looked at the clerk with a | benighted expression. “They won't let me alone.” she said pitifully, and strode out into the May sunshine. Greta Garbo is carrying about a book of English pronunciation and taking | frequent_lessons, making ready for a talkie. Even sex appeal isn't going to withstand the terrific demand of the puplic for voices in films. And Greta's present picture will probably be her last in the silent medium. (Copyright. 1990, by North American Newspaper Alliance.) BRADY, M. D. rested. The texture and healthiness of | the skin seem to improve with the tan- {#ing. When a patient has acquired a rich mahogany tan his skin seems. al- ways warm, and the patient feels com- fortable, when and where most of us would be chattering with cold. Sunburn is an extremely unpleasant accident and in severe cases it is quite as serious as a burn of equal area from fire. Even a mild or first-degree sun- burn (simple reddening of the skin without formation of blisters) does not hasten the tanning process and so the young indoor dweller who seeks a coat of tan in a short Summer vacation should be cautious about exposing the skin to the sunlight, It is a good plan to follow a graduated schedule, expos- ing the skin only five or ten minutes at a time, for three successive times, the first day; increasing the periods of ex- posure only five minutes a day. Where the sunlight is strong and nearly verti- cal, even thesé short exposures may prove too long. For the relief of first-degree burn (whether from sunlight, arc lamp or mercury vapor quartz lamp, or_fire) calamin lotion is grateful, and this may be followed by a smearing of the red- dened skin with boric ointment or with {reshly made cold cream. Calamin lo- tion is much used as a soothing lotion for burning, smarting, itching skin troubles and consists of a mixture of one-half ounce each of zinc oxid and calamin powders, one dram of glycerin, two ounces each of lime water and 5 per cent phenal solution, and enough Tose water or plain water to fill the half pint bottle. This must be shaken up and the lotion patted upon the skin with the hands, without rubbing. ‘When the burn is of the second de- gree ' (blisters) the same care must be taken as in dressing a fresh wound, at least in the first few days. Most of lhe popular remedies do more harm good.. Never apply carbolic Jhmol) in any form where there is ister or abrasion or opén wound. Only sterile salve should be used, if any. If the box of salve has been previously | B! opened or used, it is no longer sterile, if it ever was. Plain petrolatum from a collapsible tube is preferable to any homemade oil or grease or salve. Many proprietary ointments offered for burns contain phenol or some phenal deriva. tive, and will inevitably delay the heal- ing process if used. What I have called the soothing pi can have, yet does not delay hi Boric acid, benzoic acid, of each, 0.5%; zinc peroxid, 3.0%; zinc stearate 4%; zinc oxid, 12%; in petrolatum, scented with aromatic oils.
