THE BVENING STAR, WASHINGTOX, IF._C. TUESDAY. MAY 28 1929.° FRENCH RIVIERA ““Dearth of Dollars From Tour- | ists Alarms Resort Leaders. By the Associated Press. NICE, France, May 28—A hundred thousand tourists who neglected to in- clude the French Riviera in their itin- eraries this year are responsible for a business men’s revolt against the muni- cipal governments of the leading Riviera resorts The past season has been one of the leanest since the war. Nice had 50,000 fewer tourists than last year. The aver- age tourist spends a week in Nice. That means a loss of 350.000 tourist days, which rolls into much money. Cannes. Menton, Juan les Pins and St. Raphael suffered corresponding decreases. Business men in all the resorts have organized to force their municipal au- thorities to do something to stop the tourist seepage which this year has re- sulted in millions of dollars” loss to some of the leading hotels. On the other hand, the Italian Riviera has enjoyed its most prosperous season since 1918. In some measure this is due to the fact that roulette is played at San Remo and many tourists who ordinarily visit Monte Carlo were fright- ened away by reports of trouble in the prinic) However, an order from Mussolini is credited by the French with being chiefly responsible for the sudden inrush of foreigners. LONDON, May 28.—Warwick Rob- erts, boatswain of the steamship Ves- tris, testifying into the liner's loss, said that the vessel never recovered an up- right position after the violent shock she sustained on the Sunday evening before she foundered. HAVANA, May 28.— Cuba at last has 1its fashionable beach resort, its public preserve, where Soclety with a capital “S” is proud to be seen in| bathing deshabille. It is the new La Playa, former gathering place of peo- ple who loved sea bathing enough to put up with the irritation of steaming cubby holes, an inadequate shower sys- tem and the vulgarities of an uncen- sored_crowd. | La Playa for yers has been Havan's only protected bathing place. It is a | short stretch of concave sandy beach, | measuring in all a little over a quarter | of a mile and protected from sharks | by a sand bar running across its mouth. | Here nature gave old Havana residents | A huge, untroubled swimming pool. and astute concessionaires insured resident appreciation of nature’s beauty at the rate of $1.20 & day. It was the joy of Havana children and the curse of the exclusive Havana Yacht Club, which | stood in staid security on its western edge. &5 Beach Management Changes. ~ | But in the last year beach geography and beach manners at La Playa have been transformed. American hotel ex- | ecutives decided it should become an- | other link in the chain of resort prop erties developed nd operated to entice the dollars of rich Americans with tropical charm and up-to-date service. La Playa has become a rendezvous for the socially athletic. Replacing the chocolate-colored skins and double-duty underwear of hundreds of its former visitors are the fashionable tan of American girls and the checks and stripes of the latest thing in bathing suits. Great Success. Socially, the new La Playa is a huge success. Even Havana Yacht Club me bers d themselves robbed of the tra- ditional privilege of patronizing the public beach. They swarm over and through the now useless barbed wire barrier in eager appreciation of the variety of sights to be seen, the cool shade of countless beach umbrellas and the zestful “niceness” of the new public beach atmosphere. La Playa. after 30 yvears of health- | giving service to the ‘common run of | folk, has come into its own as a fash- ion resort. THREE SPANISH REVOLT HEADS SENTENCED TO DIE !
