When firemen began to use their axes as weapons, they alieged afterward, they were forced to adopt extreme measures in their defense. Fire hose | were attached to street hydrants and streams of water were played on the struggling _mass, firemen, police and students alike being drenched. Dr. Manuel Puig Casauranc, chief of the federal district government, rushea to the scene, and, ordering the police 1o | cease firing, entered the building and induced the students to leave in an orderly manner. Dispersing here, the strikers broke into groups and went to various parts of the city, staging other demonstra- tions. Leaders of the strikers today claimed their movement now includes more than 7,000 students. Two preparatory school teachers today announced they were re- signing out of sympathy for the strikers The students have planned a huge manifestation Sunday to impress upon | the government the strenglh of their movement and reiterate thelr demands for the resignation of Minister Padillo, WALK DISCS URGED. Business Club Suggests Method of Marking Off Zones. Use of metal discs set in paving to guard crosswalks and isles of safety was recommended to William H. Har- land, director of traffic, in a letter from the 'American Businéss Club, which inted out that this method of mark- ing off safety zones is more lasting and conspicuous than paint and therefore more ecoonmical. The Business Club has been conduct- ing a campalgn recently in the interest of safety measures for Washington trafc.
