YOUTH IS ACQUITTED IN DEATH OF WOMAN Anderson Jury Frees Spence in 30| Minutes as He Says She Pursued Him, | By the Associated Press. i ANDERSON, 8. cxmo? 23 —Tarris | B. Spence, 22, today acquitted of | a charge of murder, preferred against him after the body of Mrs. Clara Bry- son Adams, partially decomposed, Was found in the Saluda River near here early in March. It took a jury 30 min- | utes to reach the verdict late yesterday. The morning session was taken up | with defense testimony. Five witnesses testified, among them being Spence, who told of his affairs with the Dewey Rose, Ga., woman. ‘Arguments and ths judge’s charge completed, the case went to the jury at 5:12 p.m. At 5:42 o'clock Spence was free. Testimony was introduced to show that the woman had been scen early in February at the time Spence was in Detroit. Spence’s mother, Mrs. C. C. Spence, testified she saw Mrs. Adams on February 8. This was more than a month after Spence and Mrs. Adams had taken a trip together to Tennesses, she said. Spence told the jury he had been pursued by the 50-year-old woman and had left a job in an Alberton, Ga., cot- ton mill to escape her attention. A trip | to Tennessee was made with her, Lut he deserted her and had not seen her || since. HIDES IN RUMBLE SEAT AND ACCUSES HUSBAND | New Yorker Held on Bigamy Charge After Wife Spies on Mate's Tryst. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 23.—Because he had the misfortune to own an automo- bile with & rumble seat, William Leffler, 23 years old, of 119-11 Two Hundred and Second street, Queens Vilage, Queens, found himsef held yesterday in $3,000 bnu on a charge of bigamy. A week ago, Leffler, telephoning from his home, made an appointment to take | a young woman motoring. His wife, Mrs. Mildred Runel, whom he married a year ago, overheard the conversation | and slipped out to the garage. Hiding | in the rumble seat, according to her testimony before Magistrate Marvin in Jamaica Court, she saw her husband meet the other woman and from the | subsequent tete-a-tete she learned the second woman was Leffler's first wife, the former Gertrude Rogers of 1142 Lincoln place, Brooklyn. Leffler and Miss Rogers were married in October, 1925, and separated two years later. Having heard enough, the second Mrs. Leffier arose from out of the rum- ble seat and had her husband arrested. In court yesterday, Leffier said he con- sidered the second Mrs. Leffler his law- ful wife, as he had obtained a divorce from his first wife last March, which, however, was 10 months after he had married l second time.
