NEW YORK, May 23.—After a ner- ‘vous opening. due to liquidation of spec- ulative margins weakened by yesterday's break, an irregular, half-hearted recov- ;I’y set in on the Curb Exchange to- ay. Certain stocks .allied substantially, but the list as a whole did not make much headway, being subjected at times to further pressure, as calls for more margins were disregarded. Utllities Show Strength. Utilities showed a disposition to rally most whenever offerings abated. The Superpower issues lost heavily on the initial decline, but all retraced their ground when support was extended. ‘The one particularly strong issue in this group was United Gas Improvement. After its remarkable action Wednesday it added more than 4 points to its ad- vance, approaching the 200 level. This was thought to be in response to reports that a stock bonus and a split-up were imminent. Electric Investors, Electric Bond & Share, Northeastern Power and one or two others displayed good recu- perative powers, but their gains were of smaller proportions. The heaviest losers on the early sell- ing were Tubize Silk, down 15; U. S. Freight, off more than 4: Deere & Cc Libby Owens and Goldman Sachs. Pressure persisted in the case of the last named and it broke below 100 for the first time on the movement on ap- prehension over the effect of the shrink- 2ge in the value of its investments, due to the general market collapse. Hay-, gart and Trans-America, in the same class, were still soft, but did not break 0 abruptly. Good support was witnessed in the aviation stocks, especially those in which special developments are believed to be imminent. After some hesitancy the tone firmed, but the only activity was centered in National Aviation Niles Bement Pond met with a fresh, supply of offerings. | Mining Group. The best recoveries in the mining group were in the high-priced New- mont, and stocks of similar class led the olls when pressure abated. Gulf of Pennsylvania rose several points, but others fluctuated in narrow limits. A few low-priced issues in which pools have been active recently showed fur- ther weakness, notably Intercontinent Petroleum and Pacific Western, both making new lows. Grigsby Grunow was a strong point in the miscellaneous industrial division, and Paramount Cab steadied on & re- port that a new group had been formed | to handle the market for the stock. It was also reported that an important contract was about to be closed for two- thirds of the company’s production. An increase in the dividend next month is looked for. TWO DISTRICT MEN ON MILLER BOARD Special Dispatch to The Star. STAUNTON, Va., May 23.—The an-| nual stockholders’ meeting of the Miller Train Control Corporation was held yes- | terday at the company’s office, and was largely attended by stockholders from various States and the District of Co-| lumbia. | Two well known Washington men, ! Melvin C. Hazen, District surveyor. and A. O. Dille, owner of the Union Stock Yards, were elected members of the board of directors of the Miller com- pany. Mr. Hazen was also elected vice president. Reports showed the affairs of the company in good condition and that| remarkable progress had been made during the year. H. B. Miller, first vice president and general manager, in his report to the stockholders said: “Interest in train| control has been greatly increased by the public demonstration given on May 1 by the Monon R. CHICAGO, May 23 (#).—Wheat prices averaged lower here today, largely as a result of comparative weakness of the Liverpool wheat market, and because of slackness of export demand. However, declines were checked by a forecast of dry weather in Canada and of some- what higher temperatures there tomor- row. Besides, Winnipeg dispatches said rain would be welcomed over a large area owing to shortage of subsoil mois- ture.
