While the use of radio on land, at sea and in the clouds has advanced with amazing swiftness, its underground utilization has baffled engineers who have spent years in trying to devise a practical means for communicating with entombed miners. Experts who have been conducting experiments for the Bureau of Mines since 1922 have reached the conclusion that radio as developed today does not itc:l\': the underground message prob- em. Radio Dropped for Phone. ‘The bureau temporarily has aban- doned its efforts to develop radio for thi: work, and is concentrating on the improvement of the mine telephone and geophone as offering greater immediate usefulness. There are two obstacles in the feasi- bility of underground radio—penetra- tion of the earth by the waves and de- a set which, while light, will be powerful enough to receive the feeble signals after penetration. Received at Some Depth. Although signals have been received at some depth in mines in the eastern part of the country, it was suspected they were carried into the mine through open shafts and over the wiring and piping systems. Actual penetration of strata was thus drowned out by signals received from shaft and metallic con- ductors. In Colorado and other Western States, however, there was considerable evidence of actual penetration of the earth. The States in which that oc- curred have an arid climate, which means a dry overburden and constant increase in radio penetration, engineers say. But it is believed the penetration is not strong enough to permit the use of sufficiently simple and light receivers to allow even one-way communication in rescue work where speed and port- ability are essential. The engineers also found that the apparatus required for transmitting messages out of the mine would be so cumbersome that it would be virtually useless in rescue work. —_— Papered Truck Patch. Government plant experts are en- gaged in a thorough test of the “paper mulch” which has been used experi- mentally in some locations with a con- siderable degree of success. The paper mulch was first suggested by a Hawai- ian pineapple grower, who covered the ground with an impregnated paper which permitted thew:hoou to find their way through but entirely sup- pressed the we that usually grew between the plants and which sapped the ground of its vitality. In this in- stance it was a great success as well as on some small truck patches where the experiment has been tried in dif- ferent parts of the country. The Gov- ernment experts, however, will not make an official report on the subject until they have tried it out thoroughly and have conducted experiments with the different kinds of paper which have been offered as suitable.
