‘44 CONDEMN CHICAGO SCHOOLS AS UNSAFE Engineers Watch 13 Other Buildings Recently Con- structed as Probe Is Asked. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May 17.—Two grade school buildings, built less than five years ago at a cost of approximately $500,000 each, have been ordered close following statements of engineers that they were unsafe for occupancy. H. Wallace Caldwell, president of the Board of Education, urged State's At- torney John A. Swanson to make an investigation into cireumstances sur- rounding the schools’ construction. Thirteen other schools of the same type were regarded by the engineers as safe for the present, but will be kept under close scrutiny to prevent fur- ther deterioration. ~ Nineteen others were considered safe, but were said to ehow faults in almost every branch of construction. Many Faults Shown. ‘The condemned schools, the engineers said, showed faulty design, r ma- terials, poor workmanship and neglect of specifications. Both were of reinforced concrete con- | struction. Caldwell said a plece of cement taken from the wall of one building crumbled to dust in his hand ‘The schools were built while William E. Dever was mayor and while Charles Moderwell was president of the Board of | Education; William K. Pellows and, lat- er, Theophilus Schmidt was chairman of the building and grounds committee of the board, and John C. Christiansen was school architect, although Edgar S. Smith was employed as supervising architect. Caldwell said he would de- mand that it be definitely established who designed and built the buildings and that those gullty be prosecuted. Records Are Asked. TImmediately after receiving Caldwell's Fequest for an investigation, Swanson msked for all construction records of the board covering the schools. He stated he would commence the inquiry at once. ‘Approximately 1,400 pupils will be af- fected by the closing of the schools. The -orders were issued too late to be given the children, and teachers were told to meet them at the doors of the building today and assign them to other nearby schools. ‘According to engineers, it would cost sbout $300,000 each to recondition the two condemned bulldings and much more to recondition the other faulty buildings. It is presumed that they have located other similar spots. The industry has already attracted pri- vate interess, but these have been small ventures compared with the one which the government will launch. One of 3% has failed, but the failure is attributed to poor manage- ment and an ill-advised selection for the site, which did not offer sufficient grazing land. England, Shocked By Hospital Blast, Phones Sympathy Two London Editors Call Cleveland—Mayor ‘Also Talks. By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, May 17.—Shocked by the Cleveland clinic disaster, the editor of the London, England, Sketch and the editor of the London Daily News telephoned newspaper men here for ad- ditional information. T. A. Robertson, managing editor of the Cleveland News, yesterday talked for 25 minutes to the editor of the London Daily News, 4,000 miles away. The British editors spoke the same language, but they had a hard time understanding the American newspa- per man, especially after his words had trickled all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. But the Londoners finally got the details they were after. “Horrible!” said one of the London editors. “Shocking!” said the other. Other _condolences were sent by Britons. Talking to Jhon D. Marshal, mayor of Cleveland, by telephone, the lord mayor of London asked him: “Please convey to the sufferers the con- dolences of London and all England. We only wish we could do something to aid you.” The " editor of the London Daily Sketch told Mayor Marshal, “The whole world is deeply concerned with your misfortune.” 34455 Comsttn by Who Wear FALSE TEETH No longer does any wearer of false teeth meed to be uncomfortable.
