28 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €, FRIDAY, MAY 17, 1929.° STUDENTS SHOW SHLL AS COKS Dennison Schoolgirls Study! Housekeeping and Beauty Parlor Arts. Refutation of the allegation that the modern girl is an inefficient house- keeper is demonstrated daily by 102 students of the Dennison Public School, Fourteenth ‘and S streets. Under the supervision of a proficient staff of teachers, headed by Miss Mary | | Lackney, principal and director of do- | mestic art of the District school sys- tem, and Miss Emma Jacobs, director of domestic science for the District schools, the personnel of the institu- tion is shifted through a score of classes throughout the year until it is determined just what branch of art the students excel in, Customers Are Booked. An uninterested person who might saunter in perhaps would think he was within a combined barber shop, cafe-| teria and dressmaking establishment. | One room is given to work in mani- curing, shampooing and_hair curling. When the pupils are efficient in this line of work, customers will be booked by the principal and the income used | for the purchase of material and equip- ment. Another department is used for in- struction in cafeteria work, including catering, cooking and display of food. All_modern_equipment has " been . in- stalled in this department. Members of this department are dispatched to teas and receptions, where they are paid for their services for catering and for their cooking. Special dinners are held at the school, and the cooking and serving are done entirely by mem- bers of the class for experience. Or- ders received from the public are filled by students. Dressmaking Section. Another section is devoted to dress- making instruction. Tailor’s dummies, scattered pleces of cloth, scissors and glrls with pins between their teeth form “gcenery” in this department. At present this class is preparing cos- tumes for the Spring novelty perform- ance of the Epiphany Girls' Glee Club. The costumes are made from tissue pa- per and all of the work is done by the pupils. The school was established in 1927 to provide tralning for girls who were obliged to leave school to go to work when they reached their sixteenth birth- day and had not completed the eighth grade course of study. Academic Subjects Covered. A number of the girls already have received certificates and are at present working at various shops in the city. Four graduates are working as beauty specialists and several others are dress- maker’s assistants. | extreme right, Mary Burn and Alice Poole. In the department for the care of in- fants, the girls are instructed carefully in this line and are dispatched on nu- merous occasions to care for babies while mothers do their shopping or housecleaning. Besides the two directors of the school six teachers specialize in the various branches. They are Miss Della Clark, Miss Ruth Bowdler, Miss Winifred Al- | bather, Miss Ethel Bland, Miss Gertrude | Cook and Miss Clara Partridge. Thousn;(rlrl’myers a St;crmd‘ The natives of Tibet are rigid be- lievers of the efficiency of prayer and they think that the oftener a prayer is said, the more likelihood of its being answered so they have invented ma- chines that do their praying for them. | These do the work much more rapidly than the human could possibly do it. The machine consist of a wheel with a number of pockets in it. The prayer | to be satd is written on a paper tape | and sometimes it is duplicated many | times on the same tape. For a certain consideration, the native is allowed to place a prayer in one of the pockets and he is then allowed to spin it for a limited period of itme. As the wheel may be made to revolve very rapidly, it is possible to make a thousand pray- ers every second. Some of the machines set up in the temple are driven by wind or water power so that the human supplicant is relieved of all man- ual labor beyond the placing of the e N T N N N N N N A ging skin revitalized by AMOR SKIN To women who prize youthful loveliness and smooth une *wrinkled faces, Amor Skin proffers a promise.
